Default Headlight not working (left side only)

2005 S-Type R

My left side light is not working when I bought the vehicle last week. I'm told it's an HID light and I can troubleshoot by swapping the bulb and the ballast. I wanted to try to swap the bulbs but there appears to be no room to get the bulb out once I take off the plastic cap. Am I doing something wrong here or is there an easier way to try the bulb swap? Maybe I need to do the ballast swap or replacement. If so I could use some guidance on how to do that as well as I'm not sure which part is the ballast or how to access it.

The ballast is that silver box. A couple members have said they removed cap and were able to fish bulb out using a mirror. Most take the front plastic bumper cover off. I did. Not too bad and way easier. Then you can remove the assembly and work on a table. The ignitor for the bulb is removed by turning in the direction of the arrow you will see. Sometimes they are stiff to turn. The ballast wires go to the ignitor with another press lock. Get the digital workshop manual. It has a good detail for cover removal pointing out all the hidden bolts. I do not take out the bottom torx bolts holding the bumper cover to the bottom splash guard and let the cover hinge away. Taking the front wheels off gets more working room. Have a good read of the manual and idetify the bolts first. Best of luck

Ugh, well I don't have a garage and it's winter in Utah so this might have to wait to take the bumper off.. Any tips on removing the ballasts? I figure I can swap those easy enough...unless there's something more to it than removing that screw I see there?

well the other end of the wire plug is underneath the cover and has a spring pressure twist lock. Use search and see if you can find any posts about hid headlight bulb without removing bumper cover. I have an 06 s type r and i tried it without removing the cover and had no luck

Got a couple of fuses and a relay to check before digging too deeply. Wiring diagrams here:

JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource

Scroll down to figure 08.2.

If the other headlight is working properly, swap relays R10 and R13. If the problem follows, the relay was at fault.

Under the hood, check fuse F34. Inside the passenger compartment, just forward of the.right front door, check fuses F8 and F9.

Did you actually try to replace the bulb? It is a bit tricky to replace bulbs in that car. I have replaced both the drivers side and passengers side headlights in my 2006 S-Type without taking the bumper off. Space is tight but it definitely can be done.

Thanks for the tip on fuses and relays. No I haven't tried to replace bulbs (see my OP). I can't access the bulb without taking the bumper off, there's no room to remove bulb.

Thanks for all these ideas and locations.
But I can't figure out where "Scroll down to figure 08.2." is on the link you sent me. Where exactly is that, what manual or link am I looking for (on the link you sent it send me to a page with several other manual and resource links).

You mean you can’t read my mind?

Once you open that link, at the top of the page you will see wiring diagrams broken down by year. Select 2005 for your car and a huge PDF will open. Best to view it on a desktop or large tablet. From there, scroll down to figure 08.2 to see HID exterior lighting.

It’s worth saving the link as that site has tons of great technical information.

I guess the working space is different between the S-Type and S-Type R
