Angry Help!! Odometer not showing!! 2000 S Type

I bought the S type last week and when I brought the car home I noticed there was something that popped up on the instrument cluster displays saying disc error and then the odometer reading just went away. The car only has 42 k miles on it.
I tried to manipulate the dimmer switch and also looked at all the fuses. Not sure what just happened and what could be causing this. The other gauges are working.
Any advise will be helpful

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to S-Type forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

If it actually said DSC error one not disc error you may not have a problem. The DSC (dynamic stability control)
error message does periodically appear for me but always goes away with a restart of the engine. Could be dirty ABS sensor.

You most likely have an issue with the instrument cluster, AND another issue with the stability/traction control.

If you are able to pull the instrument cluster out of the dash slightly, while leaving it connected, try pushing up/down on the large multi/pin connector in the center.

The layered circuit board where the connectors plug in have issues on that model. You most likely need another instrument cluster.

If you find that's the case, you can get a used one and have it programmed to your mileage. You will need two keys to do this, as the key programming is stored in the cluster.

I am thinking if buying one from ebay. Do you think the mileage is stored in ECU or the cluster?
There is one guy who can program it but I wanted to try it before I pay him. thanks

The mileage is stored in the cluster. So is the key programming. If you replace the cluster, you will need two keys and a computer to reprogram the cluster (authorize) with the existing key codes. A Jaguar dealer can do the keys, but not the mileage change, as I'm not aware of any dealer allowed to program a used cluster (for mileage).

Dear ServiceMasterD,

I bought a used cluster on ebay. Now the guy is saying that he will charge $75.00 for setting up my mileage and $150 to clone everything including vin number and programming.
My question is that do I need him to program it or I can do it myself. I don't know what mileage to tell him because i know the last recorded mileage but I drove like 10 miles after it stopped working. Kinda confused

The only way this seller can clone your keys and mileage (not even sure on the mileage bit) is having dealer level diagnostic software - like WDS or IDS

You most likely can not do it yourself. You could counter his offer and tell him you'll give him $100 for any programming needed. If he's able to do the mileage, he has done this many times before and should be able to do it fairly quickly.

Does he have good feedback on Ebay? Ask him how he is going to program the keys to the cluster. I didn't think that was possible without the cluster installed in the vehicle.

I will ask them to do it for $100. They asked me to send my old cluster back and they will program it or clone it to the used unit.

one question i asked them was that does the mileage gets recorded on the display board or the circuit board on the cluster. Their response was circuit board not the display board. I could have bought a cheap cluster and could have swapped the display board because it is connected with two connectors. I didn't feel like taking a risk so I send it to them.

If you can, report back how the repair goes?

Several people have had problems changing the cluster and getting it to all work properly because of anti-theft issues with the PATS system. Even the dealers have had problems.

This might sound dumb, but have you tried pressing the "Reset" button on the left hand side?

I may have misunderstood the OP but my Odometer will go away if there's an error displayed which can be hidden by pressing the reset button.

Well here is the situation:
I bought the cluter from ebay and send in my original one to get cloned for $150. They told me it will be plug and play. They sent me the used cluster that was programmed or clonned from my original unit.

I can see the mileage now but the car wont start. I reconnected the original one the car started immediately.

I emailed them back and they were like we had lot of issues with these and they will offer me refund and cannot offer anything else.

End result is I am still stuck and I can't get the car inspected unless the mileage is shown on the instrument cluster.

what are my options now??

Find a firm that repairs clusters or approach a dealer to program one.

Well I am afraid the dealer is your last hope?

That's why I asked you to report back because it's not real clear how all that works. I am sure the reason is theft and the PATS system. Otherwise people could clean stolen cars for resale to easy.

my dad took it to the dealer with the original cluster to get it programmed. They told him they will charge $160 to program it. He tells me that they told him the started the car after programming and now the car wont start. The car is not even starting with the original one anymore and seem to them some security system has activated and maybe ecu has to be programmed. My dad the left the vehicle with them and came home.

Not sure how much are they going to charge me for all this mess. Bad start with jag already
