Default HID Fog lights

Hey guys,

Just wanted to know which bulbs you guys who did the HID conversion for the foglights used. Sylvania says it takes a H3 bulb, however looking at the light / bulb today it looks more like an H1 type in a housing. So before I go purchase a kit, i wanted to know which one's you guys would recommend. Is it plug and play, or is there some "modding" required to put HID's in the fog lights.

Thanks guys! Happy cinco de mayo

My 03 used H1.

There is a LOT of confusion about the S-type fogs.

I've heard h1, h3, and h11.

It actually just adds to the confusion by claiming the fogs are h3 when they aren't.

this is exactly why i asked... The H1 bulbs goes into a pod that connects them to the foglight housing. This pod kinda looks like a 9006/9005 pod, but if i get the h1 HID kit, how would it fit in the POD seeing the the wires and connections would be different.

so who has actually changed their fogs to HID?

I have, I used h1's the 9006 / 9007 pod is the H11 base. This sounds like the setup in my X-type.

On my 2003, the car had a cover and then an actual metal retaining clip for the bulb. - Look at what actually HOLDS the bulb to the back of the light. You also aren't really able to reattach that pod.. You have to cut the wires and solder / heatshrink to the HID wiring.

what holds the stock h1 bulb into place is the base / pod. No metal retaining clip, I can see how a metal retaining clip would work, but actually its the base that connects to the light, and the the connector to the car is plugged on the base of it. Does this mean i need a H11 type bulb, instead of the h1, since the h1 HID bulb will not be able to go inside the pod?

Why does this seem so complicated, most HID's kits are just plug and play! eeerr!

I feel your confusion....
Here is what an H1 looks like

My 05 uses H11 for the fog lamps... they look like this..

So I can see if the housing takes the H11, how in the world would a H1 work?

But I can see how some people would get the H3 confused with the H1

Here is an H3 bulb.

Just trying to help...I don't know for sure what bulb is used in the 03 since the 05's housings are totally different.

Fixed a picture error, Thanks ndy4eva

That's not an H1 bulb. This is H1.

Thanks, guys. (I'm still confused, though. Fortunately not planning to change from stock.)

Ok let me shed some light here.

IF your car uses the pod to mount an h1, an h11 WILL mount in, as the base will replace the pod. (This is similar to the X-Type fogs).

My car does NOT use the pod, but instead had a cover and a metal retaining clip for an h3 bulb.

Newer cars lost the cover and instead use an h11.

I have 6k in mine - head and fog. It looks cool, but If I were to do it again, i'd go 4300. The light it puts on the road, and signs etc is a bit blueish...

Here's a couple pics, and my car is silver.

Default 2003 s-type r fog light bulb

Ok so I picked up a pair of Hella 100W H3 bulbs for the STR....guess I should have read this thread first. I trusted the Osram-Sylvania guide. I'm sure the bulb difference is between the standard S-type and the R as they look totally different (R has more of a round projector lens whereas the standard light has an oblong lens occupying the whole space down there). Anyway I upgraded the 55w fogs in my maxima to 100W clears and it was a HUGE improvement. The standard 55w fogs in the STR look absurd underneath the blueish HID headlights.....looks like you lit a yankee candle and jammed it in there...the "xenon" (ie..blue tinted) 100W Hella's should do the trick. Before I rip into this thing can anyone absolutly confirm the fog light bulb style in an 03" STR? If not, anyone have any tips on replacment

Ed... Real HID's are the way to go. Forget the bulbs (which WILL hurt the S-Type's very thing wiring, and possibly the housing due to heat). I have a hookup to get them locally if needed. Should cost around $75 for the kit. Btw I think the S-type and STR have the same fog light lens, BUT a different surround on it.

I'm somewhat local if you need help with installing it.
