Frank, welcome to the forum. Congratulations on your new car. First, follow the link to introduce yourself.

On your J gate issue, a simple temporary fix is to use N unless P is needed for safety. Here is a thread on the gate issue. It may be a different issue than yours but search the Stype forum and there are bound to be more.

Being a 2000 car it may be a stretched shift cable. If it is, it might adjust or else need replacing.

In case it's electrical, check the guide for your era car - will be on JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource

Things we dealt with when the X200 was introduced.

Make sure the brake lights work properly. IIRC, the same switch (on the pedal) controls the shift lever interlock and the brake lights. If the switch is bad, the interlock solenoid may be okay.

On the early models, there's a common scenario with the transmission that may leave you stranded if you don't always use the parking brake. The transmission itself (not the lever) can get stuck in park, especially if on an incline. Then if you're really unlucky, there's a fragile plastic piece in the J-gate assembly that breaks if you pull too hard on the lever. More details here, including a very simple procedure (in post #3) to follow when parking:

When the parking pawl gets 'jammed' on the 5R55N (on an incline?) you need to 'rock-the-car' back and forth with someone attempting to move the selector lever out of park.
I instructed customers to ALWAYS use the handbrake and the one's that heeded my warning don't have issues.

Stop and use the handbrake, THEN put the selector lever in PARK. (in that order)

Do you suggest doing the same Stop, use handbrake and then selector lever in Park for the later s-types as well. I have a 2004 model and had issues with the car being stuck in Park.

I have an 01 and I can remove the key when it is in N. On my newer car, the gear needs to be in P before I can remove the key. If your car will allow key removal on N, I will use handbrake instead of P.

The later models have the electronic parking brake which is applied automatically.

I'm not well versed with the later models so can't offer any advice about whether to apply the parking brake manually or let the automatic function do it.

As far as the "car being stuck in Park", do you know if it is the shift lever or the transmission which is not cooperating? Within the J-gate assembly, there's a solenoid-operated lock which prevents moving the shift lever from Park unless you've applied the foot brake. When this lock is engaged, you can only move the lever a short distance, perhaps a few mm, and then it hits a hard stop. If the lock is releasing properly, but the transmission itself is restricting the lever movement (via the shift cable), you can move the lever further with no hard stop, so the end of travel feels a bit more spongey. Big difference in how to troubleshoot, so please let us know.

Later models also have a known problem with the 2 bolts which secure the shift cable to the side of the transmission. Not sure if they'd cause your issue if loose, but it's worth checking them. More details here:
