Jaguar S-type 2001 - Which engine is it??

Default Jaguar S-type 2001 - Which engine is it??

Hi

So i bought an S-type with a bad headgasket. The previous owner told me, at some point the old 4.0 v8, the car was born with, was changed out to a newer 4.2 v8.

I can for the life of me not figure out what kind engine model the 4.2 v8 is..

When i google, i find this picture from wiki, which is exactly the same as mine.


I've tried to google around other Jaguars, but i cant find any engine, with the same engine cover as the above.

Please help out a frustrated jaguar owner.

The engine has a serial number on the left side of the block to the rear of the motor mount.
Should be able to determine from that.

How do i "decode" this?

There should be a DATE_DAY_TIME series of numbers. (10 digits)

If the engine was made Midnight August 12 2004 it would be something like 0408120000

If they will fit, he likely swapped the manifolds, throttle body, various sensors, wiring harness, etc. Could be the only parts not original to your car are the block, heads, and other internal parts.

I've swapped engines in other vehicles and that's how I did it. It's best to configure the replacement engine as close as possible to the original. It's usually an easy matter to swap external components between similar cores.

It seems like the previous owner did the same aswell
I've taken off the heads and as far as i can find from the stamps on the heads, they are original 4.0 heads.
So in that regard, it should be fairly easy to buy spare parts for it... right?

Your engine is an early 4.0 liter. (not 4.2)

Alright, thanks alot for the clarification.

Should i just swap the engine out, since it can have nikasil liners?

ALL my Jaguar X100-X308 cars have Nikasil engines.

The bore is less of an issue now that 'high-sulfer' fuel is gone.
Overheating is the major killer of these engine bores now.
