S-Type 4.0 Engine replacement suppliers
Hi All,
After verifying I have 3 dead cylinders on the wifes 4.0 2001 S-Type, it seems that maybe the preferred fix is just replace the whole engine. I do have concerns that there could be other engine damage caused by the water pump letting go and the car being driven several miles.
I have thought about just having the head gaskets done but again, I am finally able to convince myself that a replacement engine could be the best route to take, however, where to get the engine.
I found a place called Specialty Engines out of Houston, TX that can ship me a used 4.0 with approx. 70K miles for about $2700.00 to Pittsburgh, PA but would like some reassurance they are good supplier.
Also, if there are any other suppliers that anyone has had experience with, good or bad, I would greatly appreciate that as well.
Has anyone done an American V8, Ford 5.0 or Chevy small block in an S-Type? Just asking......lol

Do a google search for Johns Cars. They are the guys to go to on engine conversions. I am not sure if they do it for your car but worth a look or maybe talk to them if they don't list your car. The purists will hate the idea but engine wise you will have very good reliability. Put an ls1 in it and smile forever. Also checkout website jaguarv8conversions and jaguarspecialties as they both have v8 conversions.

Hey Willie - sorry to hear the situation. Does this engine supplier offer any type of guarantee? Test results? Any type of data that supports it being a solid motor?
On the oddball chance - have you called up to Wagner and Sons Foreign junkyard up in Portersville? They sometimes have oddball stuff. There is All Foreign over in Highland Park too...may be worth checking. I think Advance Auto sells Jasper blocks, in the event you could investigate a rebuild of what you have, although likely more money.
Are you thinking of going with a Lincoln drivetrain instead?

Thanks Chris, I will contact Wagner and All Foreign. I would really prefer staying with Jag engine to keep changes at a minimum. It would be fun to drop in a small block Ford or Chevy but really sounds like too much aggravation.
The other engine supplier states they have a 90day warrenty, didn't ask about other supporting docs.
My plan is to locate a few suppliers then have one of the local shops like McB in Bridgeville or Boffo Motors up in New Brighton handle the swap and let them work out any particulars. Worse case is I'll do it myself but all the little things like the A/C stuff would be a pain and since my garage is full don't have a good place other than the driveway to do the work.
My understanding is that the Lincoln engine has enough differences that the computer probably won't work with it. Stock is safe if I do pursue this route otherwise not sure what I'll end up doing. Don't want a new car payment but you never know.
Thanks! Great to get some heads up from a local....lol

What should I do?
So I want to buy this Jaguar S type 2000 V8 4.0. The man says the transmission is bad. Also there is 270k miles on this motor. I can get it for probably 1k. For that high mileage should i replace the transmission or im thinking the whole damn engine. A lot of miles for that one problem, right?

5 spd trans could cost you $1K. Decent 4.0 used engine $1.5 to $2K. Hoses, and misc. engine cpmpartment parts, probably $500.
You could easily dump $5 to $6K into the car, plus all your time and energy.
I'd say that this S-type is good for parts only.
Unless you want an educational project, I'd say save your money and purchase a 2003 or newer for $5K to $6K that runs and has lower mileage.

If the car has 270K, I'd say it is pretty tired. Have you looked at the suspension? How are the control arm bushings, bearings, shocks, brakes? You could easily put $3K into the suspension.

Try Low Mileage Engine in Memphis, TN.
Low Mileage Engines - Used Engines the Right Way
They've got contacts all over the country and provide a Carfax from the donor car to back up the mileage. Thev found me a 4.0 for a 2002 S-Type with 51K miles. $2400 including shipping from New Jersey to California.

Anybody know anyone who has purchased one?

Those 4.0 engines were talked about a couple of years back. No way could a shop do a good rebuild and sell them for only $2600. They don't mension how much their core charge is, and how much they charge you if the engine doesn't meet thier inspection.

I am close to 1000 transactions. I started using Ebay in 1996. I used to use them more than I do now. Ebay is similar to the old flea markets I used to go to with my dad. Used to be a lot of private sellers selling off their stuff and then over time was taken over by dealers and retailers. I haven't had any bad transactions in years. I purchased a 4.2L STR engine off ebay a few months ago, and most of the parts I will refresh the engine with. If you take your time, you can still get good deals, once you sort past the dealers asking high prices.
My question was if anyone had purchased a rebuilt 4.0 engine from either AAAengine or Engine-USA. I am wondering what the total cost ends up being rather than the $2600 they are asking.
I paid $2.4K just to have Darton sleeves put in my overbore 4.8L build I am working on.
Even at dealer/jobber costs, you can't purchase all the parts they claim to replace in the engine for less than $2K.
