Trying to locate, in the rear, the Vapor Canister Purge Solenoid for my 2008 S-type 4.2, in the rear, I presume. Someone told me it was over the rear axle, and I looked but no luck. If someone would be kind enough to direct me to the exact spot I would be obliged.

 

Was the car on a lift?

I think it is there but if it's like the one on my XJ it's mounted above the rear sub-frame and the entire rear diff and sub frame need to be removed or dropped to get at it. I have heard it's a terrible job. I can barely see mine as it's completely buried by all the rear diff stuff. Changing the valve is simple but unless somehow you can get up and above the rear diff to unbolt the valve. I don't think it's possible?

Here is a diagram from JPART and item 9 is the solenoid valve BUT be aware that all the parts on your car are identified by the last 6 digits of your VIN. If possible post that or this could be wrong info?




I don't want to post any part numbers until we know the VIN of the car.
I would avoid this if possible? Maybe post codes and see if it might be something else?

Thanks for your VIN and you have a VERY late 2008 and must be one of the last S-Types made?
In JPART I found XR828437 BUT only thru VIN N13088. Looking at the dealer parts sites I find they say it should be XR849660. A little over $50 from Jaguar.
Carbon Canister Purge Valve

Your code is an EVAP code. There are several but there is a big and a little EVAP leak. Yours is the small one.
Have you tried the gas cap trick? Tighten it up and/or replace it? That's usually the first suggestion.

Here is one on an S-Type and worth a look? It shows the purge valve under the hood and very easy to get to? Maybe it's not above the rear diff on your car? Take a look at your car and compare it to the picture in this thread? Note he also lists a different part number for the purge valve? His was a cracked piece of plastic that was leaking and once he found it no problem with the repair and fixing the error code.

Finally I attached a recall on the fuel tank and it does not cover your VIN range but it might be useful for background information?

So I would mess with the gas cap first maybe even replacing it?

I think someone (in US) on here has 89185 and someone (UK) has 91220 but those are the highest I've seen.

 

Thanks again Club, very very much appreciated. Here's where I'm at: Indeed, there is a purge valve essentially on top of the driver's side valve cover. However not only does it look new, it still has the P/N tag attached. Leading me to believe the previous owner was chasing this issue. That said I actually haven't tested that valve (it's new but that doesn't mean it's good). Will try that today. (And yes, I have swapped gas caps), and I was hoping the rear purge valve would be easy to find so I could check that as well. I only have ramps so a bit more of a squeeze. As far as the later serial number, the car is a "Satin" edition if that might have something to do with it all. Will report back!

OK, checked the front purge valve and though it's nice and clean it is making an intermittent clicking noise with engine running. I have read that's a sign of a bad valve -- do you agree? Thanks

 

I have NOT done this repair but clicking a lot has been reported before when chasing problems. Leaks in the tubing can cause problems too. Glad this is in the engine compartment! Hope I was wrong about the other parts being mounted above the rear diff.

Not sure exactly what fault you are chasing, but apparently it's something to do with the EVAP system. I see your troubleshooting has led to replacing the gas cap, in case the old one wasn't sealing properly.

In that vein, check the mating surface on the filler neck, where the gas cap fits. It's not uncommon for this surface to get dented from repeated contact with the gas station nozzle. No cap could make a good seal against an uneven surface.

OK, first big issue is a tiny one: whoever was "working" on this car last managed to break the electoral "clip" that powers the purge valve. Then, just to be sure he'd screwed it up, he glued the broken clip in place. So, question: where can one purchase these electric clips that power the purge valve? Thanks!
