Hello, I'm having an issue with my STR.
Recently took apart the dash and while putting stuff back together, a plastic pin holding a metal wire underneath the shifter snapped.
So like this metal wire looks like just those wire coming out of bicycle brakes.
It looks like it's latched up with this switch that goes in and out as gear goes from PRND.
I think it's telling the car what gear it is in. (Not sure, please correct me if I'm wrong.)
Well, that white plastic piece broke off and now the wire isn't held on place.
And now my car won't start.
Won't even turn the starter. I turn the key, nothing happens. Car is fully charged.
Maybe because that wire clip thing snapped, car doesn't know that it's in park or not.
Does s type not start unless it's in park? It would make sense, if someone can try starting in Reverse or Drive for me, that would be wonderful..
What should I go about fixing this? I'm not sure where this wire goes to, it's buried under carpet. I do have a parts car where I can get this but not sure how I'm even suppose to replace just the plastic clip.
Sorry this is the best picture I can provide. The clip I broke is located about where the arrow is pointing.
The drawing shows the location of the metal wire I'm talking about.
Hmm William, since you have a parts car. I would carefully remove the piece that you need from parts car. Taking notes and installing into the other vehicle. Most likely that will solve your no start you mentioned, unless you failed to tell us other details. Perhaps why you tore into the shifter first place.

On the J-gate, unless P or N is illuminated, the starter will not engage. What letter is currently illuminated?
The cable you mentioned may be from the brake interlock, but I'm not familiar with the 6 speed J-gate. The brake interlock prevents moving the shift lever out of P unless the brake pedal is depressed. I'm not 100% sure on the arrangement at the J-gate, so don't quote me on that. And I don't think it would lock out the starter, only locking out the shift lever, so my idea may be all wet.
Can you move the disconnected piece in the J-gate and see how it responds? That should give you an idea of the cable's function.
Is it possible to secure the cable end with a plastic tyrap or something similar? That might save you the trouble of tearing into your parts car.
