misfire, low idle
purchased a 2000 s type 4.0, car is in immaculate cosmetic condition for its age, 77,000 mi. but it has some problems, thought maybe some of you guys could maybe point me in right direction..... here goes..
seems like misfires, low idle, and hear a clanking sound coming from front of bank 2 when she's idle really low,
did a compression test, 120-125 lbs give or take a couple,on all cylinders, have replaced all spark plugs, all coils, seems like she's running a little better, but not like she suppose to, bank 1 runs perfect, when u remove wire from coil, engine cuts out, when I try on bank 2 barely any difference, engine doesn't cut out, so I know I got a problem with bank 2, checked for pulse on injectors, all good......
could it be the ECM?,
any help would surely be appreciated, hopefully I posted in right place, if not sorry

Check the wiring to bank 2 coils. Could have a broken wire or ground wire is chaffed or broken. From what I recall each coil neg wire goes to a common crimp between the middle cylinders.
These wires are exposed to lots of heat. They are more than likely melted/fused together. Rule everything else out before meddling with that coil harness...
I had a pesky misfire on bank 1 and I wound up rebuilding that entire harness very carefully....
You should have codes for misfires for all coils on bank 2 if none of the coils are getting power/or ground...
Look into those tensioners....

first thanks for the response, getting codes 351, 355,354, also getting a cat system fault message, but I think that's from buildup of gas not being burnt by plug, 2 weeks now trying to figure this out.......
thanks again

when you say tensioners, you mean the primary or secondary?, don't wanna sound stupid here, first time owner of a jaguar, the 2 upper ones or all 4?, also would you happen to know the location of ignition suppression capacitator?, see it on schematics but can't seem to locate
thanks again, you've been very helpful

Replacing tensioners is a must for your year, beyond that your cluncking noise is likely from the misfires. As aboano suggested your problems are likely to come from a faulty electrical harness. I would strongly advise not to drive it until you get it fixed or you'll need to replace your cats as well. While you get used to the idea of rebulding your harness you might want to check for vacuum leaks (mostly in the TB - brake booster area)

All 4. If you're asking about the ignition kill switch is on the driver side lower panel (door side just above the foot rest, you should find a hole in the plastic cover with a red button hidden in--get a flashlight)

not talking about the kill switch..... on schematics, it shows bank 1 and bank 2 each going to a separate ignition suppression capacitor from the coils, was just wondering if that could be the culprit, and where the location of capaciatator is, ......if tensioner(s) were broken or loose, would car even run?, if yes would it give the symptoms that I'm having ?.....its runs but after its running for awhile, and you let idle, engine starts cutting out, low idle.....not driving it, have in garage,
thanks,
thanks,
I doubt the tensioners would give your symptoms. It could be a number of problems, my money on the electrical harness. Nonetheless, the best way to go for it is to find a good reader and check all codes, capture live data on as many sensors as you can get and post it here. Now with JagV8 joining the thread you have one of the forum experts to ask, he help me in the past to diagnose mine.
Leaving aside the tensioners & guides... the codes could be bad coils (especially if they're aftermarket cheap ones) or yes wiring.
Last suspect - and very last - is the PCM (aka ECM). They're amazingly reliable and even take some abuse.
Ooh, is that a CATS / CAT system fault dash message? If so it relates to the suspension module (not the cat conv).
And it could be a failing battery. They trigger weird things but usually start the engine and people swear that means it can't be the battery. Yet it can, it really can. Measure volts (engine off) on load and you want near 12.6.
Battery (or bad power/ground) can cause misfire codes, coil codes, the works...

the new coils I swapped from one side to other, and bank 1 runs perfect with all the new coils .....so I don't think its the coils, if bad pcm , would one bank run normal and other bank be cutting out?,also has a brand new battery I put in, if had a broken tensioner, or loose one, would that cause bank to cut out, when I remove a coil plug from bank one engine cuts out, when I do same for bank 2,barely any difference in engine run, so I should capture live data from each coil on bank 2 and see what the data saids?.......as far as cats system fault message, do you think that definitely from suspension module, or could it be from build up gas not be fired cuz of whatever going on with bank 2?
thanks guys
thanks guys
Where did you get the cats message? If the dash then it's about the suspension module (and you get to go troubleshooting the wiring etc - be aware damp/water in the boot/trunk can be a big issue).
If battery is good, i.e. not new but faulty, and is charged, and proper coils then wiring is next - unless jumped timing chain would cause such faults.

cats message is in the dash, battery brand new, $200, had it checked yesterday just in case, charging properly, as far as cats system, if I replaced the module, would that fix message error, and if so does module need to be reprogrammed or can it just be swapped, or is that a wiring issue too?
no water or anything like that in trunk, car was a 2 owner, always garaged, immaculate exterior condition, got all service records until Dec2014, since then car driven 2,000 mi., elderly owner said started acting up, so she just let sit in garage for 2 yrs..
thanks again

final question for now......lol, took off valve covers, bank 1 chain nice and tight, bank 2 chain, loose as a goose, so I would suspect broken tensioner, would that cause that bank to run bad??, or is it still an electrical or ground issue?.....not getting any codes pertaining to cats either, not getting any pertaining to misfire either.....the first set of codes were in there after I cleared
thanks again guys...sorry to be a pain .....

As a side bar I do have a clean CATS module available but you have bigger issues with the bank 2 chain issue...
thanks for the reply.........made mistake in observation, bank 1 still has factory tensioner on it, nice and tight working fine, bank 2 tensioner has been replaced by previous owner with upgraded tensioner, question?, is new tensioner supposed to go up and down when you press on it?, I can push down on it and it goes down about a half of an inch, is that normal?, also noticed that the camshafts on bank 2 are not both lined up, the top camshaft and bottom camshaft the flat spots are not in line......therefore I would think the timing is off
I ordered 2 new upper tensioners, was wondering if anyone could point me to a timing tool kit, I see a few different ones.....also can anyone tell me how to or point me to directions on how to time the crankshaft to cams is done is it just with the tools, or is there a TDC mark somewhere, location? ??, I looked up a you tube video ,on video they say no timing marks on engine, so how do you time crankshafts with cams....
any help its appreciated, if anybody ever needs any help with computers i'm an it tech for 30 yrs, more than happy to help
