Look our for the admiration of others and people thinking your rich and trying to rob you. Those are some of the biggest problems with owning a jaguar, lol.

Funny but very true 93xj6. Something about those Jags.

from my research, the tranny is a weak point in these cars (along with all jags) watch out for clunks etc. The tranny is sealed for life which is a bad design. Also on the v8 model the ignition coils tend to go. Inorder to replace them you have to remove the manifold which costs $$$. Valve cover gaskets are weak and leak and inturn foul plugs. The drain off from the windshield wipers goes strait into the engine bay shorting electronics. However, thats all for the 4.0 for the 3.0 which is just a ford duratech motor it should be a fairly safe buy if it was maintained properly.

on a2001 4.0. check into its history and see if the timing chain tensioners have been replaced. if they haven't, you need to do it. the tensioner bodies are plastic, they get hot, brittle, and break off. usually the secondary chain snaps and valves hit the pistons and your $6000 poorer.

Seriously though bro, might wanna be sumthin you consider. Ask Biggie n some of the other S type owners an they'll be better able to advise you I guess. A beautiful car but costly to maintain.

Hello all.

Well I'm glad I saw this post. I'm going to a dealer to potentially purchase one of their three S-Types and am trying to determine which is the best for me...
'01 4.0, 41K, $15500
'02 3.0, 49K, $15500
'03 3.0, 33K, $18K

All the prices are "asking" prices so I'm sure I can get them to go down a couple grand. What interesting was I called 5 different dealers, no one besides the place I'm going to could offer a descent warranty term or cost below $3K. I had one dealer who dealt with G.E. warranty who told me they wouldn't touch an '02 S-Type. The dealer I'm going to also uses G.E. and claims I can get an extended service plan for $1500, which covers me an additional 100K miles! Kinda sounds too good to be true but we'll see.

Anyways, obviously the '03 is going to be the best car as it has the least miles and apparently '03s have "all the bugs worked out". It's just more than I wanted to spend. Going to offer $16K w/warr out the door and I'm pretty sure they'll decline. Therefore need to determine the better buy? '01 is the "better" jag, however probably much less reliable than the ford 3.0...

I'd try and go with the 02 3.0 if you can get it for around 12.5 or 13K! The 03 is the best, because you're right! The kinks have been worked out! If you shop around, you'd see that you should NEVER pay 15K for a pre 03 model!
2003 S-type 3.0 with under 41K miles for under $15K or
An 01 like this with 50K miles that you could probably negotiate for $11.5K or something close to that!
Negotiate buddy, and SHOP AROUND! Take your time!

Thanks for the advice big dreams. I live in middle GA so I'm not too far from FL, unless it's Miami, lol.

Anyways, I came home catless...I've actually never been in a S-Type before. The dealer had sold the '02 and had another '03 they didn't advertise. On autotrader, they listed the '03 for $18K. Dealer sticker, $22999 and $23499! I drove the '01 4.0 and just wasn't impressed with the power, I also felt the interior left me wanting more. I then drove the even less powered '03 3.0. Yes, it even less powerful, but I like the fact it's more reliable, cheaper and easier to maintain and gets better MPG. I was very impressed with the interior of the '03. IMO, I thought the fit and finish was superior to the pre '03. Not giving up yet. Hoping for a S-Type '03 for $15K OTD. I'll keep looking.

Dang it! That '03 in miami you posted was sold yesterday! Found an '03 V8 Nav, 49K $16995 firm, shipping $600, $2200 for a 4 year unlimited mile warranty. It's been "inspected" yet I'd have to get it sight unseen...Guess it's a crap shoot, great deal, but sight unseen sucks...
