Default My sick Cat

Hi everyone, 1st post here and unfortunately its not a happy one. I'm in search of some advice.

I have a 2004 S Type V8 (4.2) 114K miles, recently had head gasket job done (July 20th), and now the shop can’t seem to get the "readiness" codes to reset. They asked me to drive it for 100 miles or so them bring back which I've done but still no reset on code. I’m going on day 4 now and approaching 300 miles of driving.

Today I decided to go by local Autozone and Advance auto to see what codes they came up with (they are as follows)
1. P1647 (says for Chrysler OEM brand)
2. P1000 (says for BMW OEM Brand)
3.P0128 (says engine Coolant Temp) or Check coolant level. (levels are fine but light on dash says low)

Any advice or anyone having to reset "readiness" codes please chime in. I can’t get car inspected without having these codes cleared.
Thanks in advance

TL

You need to get the correct guide for the DTCs
This one is for the 2003 MY X202 but it will have the same codes and explanations.

What shop are you using? I'm in northwest Raleigh and I know most of the area shops....

Angry re sick cat

Thanks for the reply.

Jon 89 car is at Roland’s auto in Durham, located off Avondale drive. Please let me know of GOOD shop(s) in the area.

Today I've taken the car back to the shop to see if they can reset the codes. I have driven the car for over 300 miles and nothing seems to be happening.

So far I've racked up $3660.00 for this repair, and the check engine light is still on as well as the readiness codes still have not reset. Hopefully they'll get it right and I'll be back on the road soon.

Motorcarman thanks for that guide.

Why were the head gaskets changed?

We don't see that very often and if you badly over heated the engine you might have additional problems.

Tbird6, I was told by the autoshop that it had classic signs of a headgasket problem (rough idle from cold crank, water dripping from tail pipe) they tried using a product called "blue devil" to "fix" it but that only made things worse. after driving the car for about 10 miles it did overheat and I pulled over right away to have the car towed back to the shop.
So I made the call to go ahead and change the gasket. it was comfirmed gasket was bad. I also had timing chain replaced.

Now the car's throwing all these codes. IDK.

OK thanks for that but we just don't see the 4.2L lose head gaskets and we definitely don't see any timing chain problems because 2003 is when Jaguar updated and fixed all the earlier problems.

Just seems out of place for a 4.2L??

Sometimes it does take a good while for all the readiness monitors to set ready. It took me about a week of varying driving to get them all set. I tried to follow the drive cycle instructions but that did not help any.

Thanks tbird, there was no issue with timing chain, but i decided since motor was apart and I plan on keeping this cat around for a while it was good time to change it (there was some very little scratches in one of hte upper timing chan tensioner) I may have been over zealous on that call.

The shop is suppose to use "the drive cycle instructions" Seems like I shouldn't hold my breath on that working. thanks for bursting my bubble.. LOL. I'll keep you guys updated on the progress.

Thanks for the feeback.

The best indie Jaguar shop in Durham is Flying Circus English Cars, phone (919) 596-4250. Why did you choose Roland's?

Thanks Jon89,

I went to Rolands, because of a friends recommendation (silly me). I have actually heard of and know where Flying Circus is. I was hoping to save money by going to Rolands Auto (again silly me). You get what you pay for.
