Hello All,

I am in need of an engine and trans. However, I will start with the engine. I have a 2001 S type jag 4.0. 146K miles. Any suggestions?

buy a used GM LS series engine and transmission package, they are cheap and dependable, they come as 4.8L,, 5.3L , 5.7 L, 6.0L and 6.2 L all the same size and mountings. if your lucky some have superchargers on them(mor money).

I think that would make a helluva Jaguar car!

Bad idea! It's already been done and the car was a mess! Nothing works because nothing is compatible.

I would recommend to junk the car and get something else. I am a Jaguar fan but the car you have is not worth saving.

If you still want a Jag consider getting something 2003 or newer much better car and they are cheap!

^ what he said (it's because there are many computer modules and none will work with a different engine/trans).

If you can get exact kind of engine+trans, they need to be cheap or give up. Sorry.

1st maybe i should have said, when you buy a modern engine&transmission as a package it comes with its own EMS & TCM computors(thats how we do it in USA),along with engine bay wiring harnesses!

and if you guys dont have any imagination or creative abilities, then maybe you shouldnt try it after all!

and most Jaguars are not valuable anyway, especially after 5yrs or more.

We do know all that. Did you read the existing threads about attempting what you suggest? (Clearly, no.)

Thanks so much for the comments. I will keep watching and reading until I hear something that I believe is workable. I know the value of the car and the fact, that getting rid of it is an option, just not one I'd like to exercise.

It is a 2001, S type 4.0 engine, with 146K miles. I am suppose to go back and add this car data to another thread, allowing the potential for more feedback/direction.

You can get a used trans for between $600 - $1,000 - you would need to get the fluid/filter changed and get seals, etc checked out before having it installed in your car. As far as engines are concerned - Your looking at $2,000 minimum for a used engine. Same deal - you need to have it checked out before installing. Good idea to get the tensioners done before installing. (Check Ebay and Craigslist - even the online parts wanted ad's)

Your best bet is to go with the OES engine/tranny - your potential cost - around $5,000 give or take - still way cheaper than trying to get a different drive train combo to work in your Jaguar - unless you have endless $$$ available, love to get frustrated easily and you don't mind pushing the vehicle to get it in motion... Just my $0.02

I 'had' the 2000 S-Type, 4.0 l sport.
That is, it had CATS. Sadly, my mother drives it now...

I liked the car. Lots. But then I tried the 01 S-Type R.
I'd propose getting a replacement AJ-V8 or moving to the R.

Guy, My 00 S Type is a blast, it hugs the road so well and the power is good, however, funny you mention the STR - as I am in the market for one.

I'd say junk it and get an 03 up. The suspension and refinement is night and day. I've had both.
