Unfortunately I garner nothing from that except that it contradicts the results of some over here in the USA. There's too much wiggle room in that description as to how people express what they actually did. From what I've seen reported on over here once you update you can't utilize an older DVD. I don't know why you'd want to anyway.

Still lost in the weeds ...

While it could be different region to region I doubt it. Everyone who upgraded their firmware was able to carry on using the only map disk they had (which was older than the firmware).

I don't know what wiglge room you feel was there but here's what they did: took out their own (older) disk, put in the borrowed (newer) disk, let firmware update, took out the borrowed disk, put in their own disk. All OK, but the nav now uses newer firmware from the update.

There are people on this forum in the USA who report just the opposite. Some have in fact screwed up their Nav units doing this. Go search for the threads and have a look.

I've never seen a credible report of that. Maybe they tried a wrongly-copied disk.

I've seen people report a blank nav but that's just that it's lost its firmware (and can be reloaded if they follow the proper procedure) - or has flat out broken.

Only things that could possibly cause that are:

The nav should be updated with the car running not in the on position.

with the car in the on postion you run the risk of a low battery causing the firmware to update and "bricking" the unit.

impatience can also cause the person terminate the update before its done.

Dirty lens which can cause the firmware image to be read improperly.

you can toss the logic of the wrong copied disk.

The system has internal checks to verify the MD5 checksum, if it differs the update will not proceed.

Well I have no idea WHY anyone would want to update the firmware from a new DVD and then run the with the data off the old DVD? Why not just update and run?

ut as I remember the couple of posts on this topic they updated and it didn't work but then they couldn't go back to their old DVD or as you suggested they got impatient or just had a plain error and bricked the unit. I can certainly understand the potential for new firmware not being able to read an old data structure though I'd never design and write anything that way unless I had no choice due to budgeting or technology constraints.

I'm guessing the guy you got yours from never sent another so as to eliminate the rare possibility of a burning issue or he just doesn't know what he's doing?

It can be useful just to update the firmware. Saves money and has features the old didn't..

You're kidding right? So even though you have the most current data available you elect to run with the older data? I know folks in the UK are not dumb. Come on.

updating the firmware gives you the black logo screen beeping when you click buttons, faster "lock on" for the satellite. and other misc functions.

As I posted: the new was BORROWED. So you do NOT have any new data.

(These guys give back what they borrowed.......)

They borrowed and didn't copy the data? Maybe I was incorrect in my previous assessment.

Remember I said a car meet. Pass around newer disk so the firmware loads. No copying of the disk so you don't end up with newer maps.

Others (not in the UK) were talking about copying the disk I think but reread if you want to check.

So who makes the Nav system? Presumably yet another ARM computer with a bootloader, an operating system and a navigation application?
Where can I get more engineering data on the systems>
Thanks

Plenty on here and the net. Use Search, google, whatever you like, just do some reading

If you plan to break copyright expect to be banned from this forum, though. (It does warn you......)

Which screen? There are perhaps a dozen or so.

Why don't you tell us which version you have? We can probably tell you more about the changes. Look for a 2 letter code after the NATEQ product code. It will be something like "BD" or "BE".
