Default Radio Volume Question

I just bought a 2003 R and am woefully ignorant about the computer / electronic systems. I did not get any manuals with the car and the best I could find is a audio manual for an X-type. I notice I can adjust the volume on the radio when I first start the car and its in park. Seems like once I start rolling I can not adjust it anymore. Is there something I don't know or is there a programming issue?

Thanks!

Thanks, I had a look before I posted. No manual for 2003 from Jaquar. Downloaded a generic one but it does not cover the audio system and programming. The search continues...

Thanks Norri,
I got the manual for the 2003 from Topix. But I don't see anything about the touch screen audio programs and how to use them. I thought I read somewhere there is a separate manual for this? Seems odd I can adjust the volume while stationary but once I start moving I can not. I have a feeling this is a program error and due to me being ignorant about the system.

Jaguar helpfully make some handbooks etc available free but the site is poor. Sometimes a handbook is there but for another year, yet is either the same or very like the one you want. Navigating is painful and the site mostly resists indexing by google

Whether it's worth hunting around for that specific one I don't know - or maybe try an email to their customer service.

There are settings in the (touchscreen button) Menu which maybe could be set to silly values and causing it?

Have you tried both the Volume control and the + / - steering wheel buttons to make sure all are inoperative?

Yep, tried both controls. I am hoping that it is just a setting. Maybe something to do with the automatic volume control? Not sure if AVC program affects the sounds system or just the phone, nav system and traffic announcements. It would make sense seeing once the car moves the volume can not be adjusted.

I also have a 2003 S-Type (not R). In mine, the volume is adjustable all the time, so I'm guessing you have a faulty volume control or perhaps the auto volume feature is set too low.

I'll check my owners manual later today and get back to you. In the meantime, as JagV8 said, check both volume controls - on the consol and on the wheel. If one works but the other does not then you have a faulty volume control. If neither works, then it might be a radio electronics issue.

Thanks Steve, that is much appreciated! Its both controls that don't work. They both work fine until I put it in gear. Then the volume is locked.

Maybe the automatic volume control is malfunctioning. Try turning it off per the instruction manual quoted below:

Automatic volume control (AVC)This maintains radio volume at a level

sufficient to overcome road noise as

vehicle speed increases or decreases.

To activate AVC, press and hold the

volume control knob until

AVC is

displayed. To de-activate AVC,

momentarily press the volume control

knob again. The level of AVC control can

be adjusted by turning the volume

control knob whilst in

AVC ON mode.

When AVC is ON, manual adjustment of

volume will override the AVC setting.

Try changing AVC as I'm fairly sure it affects everything.

Wow, this is great all the help being offered. I love this place!
I tried to disable AVC to no avail. I held the console volume button but saw no display telling me the AVC was on. I saw nothing on the touchscreen either. In the screen menu settings there is an AVC control bar. I moved the setting to full on to see if that made any difference. Nope. It seems more and more now that this is some type of malfunction.

Yours is an odd problem and I can't remember it ever being posted before?

Please post back if you find out the problem.

Here's a scan directly from my '03 Audio System Handbook. Mine does not have touchscreen. There is nothing in this .pdf that WhiteXKR did not already explain about the Automatic Volume Control.

Sounds like you are correct - some type of malfunction.

Please let us know when you figure out what the solution is.

Wow, thanks again Steve!
Yeah, its has to be a malfunction. I can adjust the volume when I first start it up. As soon as it goes into gear whatever volume level I had is locked. The only control I have is if I put the volume on zero, then it mutes. Aren't programs fun? I'll update when I get it fixed.

Update. This is not a fix but I figured out that if I put the car in gear before the 10 seconds or so it takes for the sound system to become active, it works normally. I also found that the previous owner installed a Sirrus system and connected to the controller. I suspect this is playing a part in the mystery. My intention is to remove the Sirrus system and install a bluetooth interface. When I do this I think we will get to the bottom of this.
