Default Removing Engine

The mechanics are trying to remove the engine out of my 2003 s type. They can't get the transmission apart from the engine. Do they need to take the frame apart and lower the engine down and take to out from underneath the car. And then get the transmission apart. That is what they are thinking.

Thanks for the help

According to JTIS, the engine lifts out from above in the usual way:

The full JTIS engine removal procedure is too big a document to add here as an attachment so I've put it on me MediaFire account. You can download it from:

http://www.mediafire.com/view/92ag4e...ne_Removal.pdf

It's a 6mB PDF document.

Default Engine Removal

Thanks for the document they couldn't find any information on the subject I will email this over to them.

One thing I forgot to mention is that they were trying to remove it from the top like any other car but they can't get the transmission and the engine to come a part. I think they said there are 16 bolts and then there are the two pins and it won't pull apart. So the idea is to drop it down and get it out to work on it.

Sometimes the pins get stuck - if they have all the bolts out (have them double check) banging on the case junction with a mallet by the pins usually does the trick...

Dropping the sub frame to lower the engine may work, but I will tell you those support bolts are extremely tight.

I would double check to make sure that all the engine/transmission bolts are out.

One more thing I forgot to ask, you mentioned getting all the bolts out just how many bolts do you need to get out.

Here's a step by step from TDC unfortunately the pics have gone but it may help you, he took the whole thing as one unit.
It's a 4.0 but I expect the basics are similar.

I am seeing 8 bolts (according to alldata) that hold the bell housing to the engine. I could be wrong.

I was talking to the mechanic and he was thinking the same thing take the trans with the engine but he didn't want to loss the oil out of the trans. But I need to have the filter change on the trans anyway and I had a filter in the trunk. I sent the link over to them.

He didn't split the trans, it all came out as one, we could use the pics!

I'm going to go ahead and acknowledge the elephant in the room here, why is your car in the hands of mechanics that don't know what they're doing, and furthermore are incapable of finding the correct information themselves?

If I hire a mechanic to do a job, I shouldn't be the one teaching them how to do it.

Neither JTIS not JEPC list the number of bolts although the Parts Catalogue does go as far as to inform they are a combination of M10x40mm Flange Bolts and M10x60mm Bolts.

(click on the image to enlarge it)

The illustration from JTIS shows 18 bolt holes through the transmission housing flange. The usual arrangement is for the locating dowels to be between two closely spaced bolt positions which would suggest 2 dowels at the positions arrowed and bolts at the remaining 16 locations.

I understand what you mean but the mechanics told me they are going into the unknown and I use these guy all the time. They told me that it isn't like taking out a chevy 283. I know these guy and they are capable. anyway I live in a small town and there isn't a Jaguar dealer nor is there any one that has change out a Jaguar motor.

They may just be scared as it's an unknown English car, in which case they'll be relieved to find - for this job and many others - it's very like anything else.

just dropping the whole subframe/engine/trans, might be quicker and easier.
