Default Replacing both rear subwoofers

2003 S type R, is there a decent priced aftermarket sub that fits in exactly where the original Alpines go with no cutting, wiring etc. I just want to take the old ones out and drop the new ones in with no hassle as I'm not great at DIY.

I can get the originals refoamed for about $80 each with shipping but was hoping I could buy a pair for cheaper.

Thanks in advance.

Would honestly suggest you purchase either of the following:

Smaller footprint good sound
Infinity BassLink Powered subwoofer: 200 watts and a 10" sub at Crutchfield.com

Bigger FootPrint, Better sound
Amazon.com: Bazooka BTA10250D BT Series 10-Inch 250-Watt Class D Amplified Tube: Car Electronics Amazon.com: Bazooka BTA10250D BT Series 10-Inch 250-Watt Class D Amplified Tube: Car Electronics

Either of these is going to be soo much superior to the bass you have now. It'll sound like a whole new system! Hookup is easy....

If you decide to go with one of those powered options, you might need a line out converter. What size are the existing ones? 6x9" ? I don't know off-hand but you can search crutchfield.com

Thanks for the replies but I'm not looking for anything bigger or to do any more wiring or adding converters or cutting out part of the shelf or any carpentry work or having a sub sat in the trunk etc, I simply want to put 2 replacement sub/speakers in that are better quality and less expensive than refoaming ($160 for the pr) the originals but will fit and drop cleanly, easily into the existing holes the 2 Alpines are in now using the same screws etc and simply plug and play.

Is this possible, does anybody know?

flblue,

If you have to remove the woofers to have them reworked anyway, it may be in your best interest to take one out, measure it (diameter and bolt pattern), and then shop around either on line or at your nearest audio shop. If you want to keep it simple, this may the way to go. Best of luck to you.

The factory rear-deck subs are 6X9 free-air units.

I beleive the rear subs in a S-Type R are 6.5" woofers. I had changed mine out with a set of kickers, however you will need to drill new holes. Mine were blown so the sound did improve for me.

Did you have to take the whole back deck off?

That's the problem all right. A lot of work and possible damage to get them out.

Would have been nice if they bolted up from underneath. It would be simple swap then.

Most car audio installations are somewhat involved. Installing a new head unit or even an amp and sub woofer is not that hard though. I've done a few write-ups:

Aftermarket Radio Running Wires

and

Installing Steering Wheel Control Module Aftermarket Stereo

I had to get the top part of the rear deck off (the carpeted/plastic piece). It's not that much work to take it all apart, but the clearance between the rear window and deck is minimal, so make sure you use the stubby screw drivers as you won't be able to use a full size one.
