Is the fault light on. Are there codes? The other thing it may be is the timing chain. If it jumps, ect it can cause the poor run condition. If it really is a timing issue, it will get progressively worse until fixed. Another jump could kill the motor.

How does he know? Has he done a compression test or is it just a guess?

Just a crazy thought. The early 4.0 engines had a reputation for bad timing chain tensionors. That would cause the timing to be off. If the timing is off wouldn't that cause a valve seat issue. I agree with Norri. The 4.0 is a real strong motor and something as severe as bent valves doesn't sound likely.

If it was bad enough I would think it could. I've seen some pretty crusty valves come out of engines before. If it is enough to prevent the valve from setting properly in the seat it would cause there to be a "bleed off" of pressure. I would let the Jag techs take a crack at it.
