Default S-Type radio,no sound

I just bought a 2003 S-Type from a friend, and the radio acts like it is working, but no sound. I read the manual, it does not troubleshoot this. Am I doing something wrong? The guy I bought it from said it worked fine and it worked during the test drive. The station displays and it says the record being played. I have had the tranny worked on and they might have disconnected the battery, but I would expect it to ask me for my code.

Any thoughts?

Normally no code in USA.

Hunt through settings / try volume. Failing those try battery disconnect.

Tried that. Each time I hit the button, MUTE ON appears on the screen. No sound. Should the second time you push it it should go off?

Yes it is, it says if there is no phone it will mute the radio. Does not say what a second press will do.

The message should disappear and the normal sound level will return.

Nope no sound, it seems odd that the switch works for ON but not OFF. I need to get some maintenance done, maybe the shop has seen this before.

thanks for your help
