Speed Limits on Automatic Tran
With a 2005 S-Type 3.0 and the standard 6 speed automatic- if I went to standard J shifting what are the limits of speed for first, second , third and fourth. Clearly I would not want to redline, but are there any set speeds that you are advised not to go beyond or some set rpm?
Thanks

No special reason, although I am a driver that does not try to push the limits.
This was asked of me by a friend and I am just curious as to what the limits on the transmission would be. My assumption, based on your question, is that I can take an gear and run it to red line???

You may be asking about the transmission programming... On the S-Type R models for instance, many owners report the engine redlining/shifting early in the 1-2 and 2-3 upshifts.
We can only speculate on the reasons for this, but I'm not certain if it effected any other of the non-R S-type models...

As Mikey said you can run any gear to redline. The car is protected so no harm done.
Now GT42R brings up a different problem that the transmission automatically shifts too soon on the early STR’s. Especially the 2003 model. But if you put the car in a gear manually then it will go to redline without problems.

How desperate is anyone to know? You might try recording the CAN messages to see if it's initiated by the PCM or the TCM, then at least you know where to start.
I thought someone had tried a different PCM/TCM calibration and it fixed it? (Maybe the XK's, done via IDS?)

I think user cambo351 tried several different combinations of PCM/TCM reflashes, none of which would work or remedy the short shifting issue...
I think I read somewhere which claimed Jag used the short shifting to 'slow-down' the 0-60 times of the STR relative to the XKR and XJR so their performance wouldn't overlap as much...

Here is a good example of my STR in Sport mode, with the J-gate in manual mode (2nd gear), you can hear me bounce ONCE, very briefly, off the early limiter at the top of the 2nd,
I've learned to drive around it, and I'm pretty adept at manually redlining into third, while just brushing past the early limiter, without actually setting it off... in this example I shifted a fraction of a second too late...

My reasons were just for an answer to a curious question. I am not one to do alternations in the car and find manual shifting as much fun as visiting the dentist.
