Default On Start-up this morning- got a P0770 code

I drove the car fine all day yesterday including a couple of highway trips and a stop at a number of stores. Everything was working fine. This morning I start the car and get an immediate "gearbox failure". Drove a short distance and got a CEL and P0770. Car was in third, but no red flashing limp mode. Took it to a European repair shop in my same zip code and waiting until morning to see their diagnosis.

Has anyone had this code or one close to it before and what was the fix? I assume that replacing the solenoid makes the most sense and obviously getting a fluid change of a number of litters has to happen.

Any ideas or suggestions on this.

Thanks

From the official jaguar workshop manual for code P0770 it states:

CLEAR ALL DTC's.
TEST the system for normal operation.
If DTC resets, install a new TCM and Main Control Valve Body.

(TMC is the Transmission Control Module)

However, random faults like this can be caused by low battery voltage, how old is your battery?

You can download and then look this up yourself in the official workshop manual.

I have had random faults before with the DTC, Cruise, ect when I had a low battery, but never anything as dramatic as a gearbox fault and gearbox 3rd gear limp mode. Would that not have cleared after driving a touch and then restarting? This battery is about a year old. I had read that in the workshop manual before and with the solenoid kits and such- as always Jag goes fro the dramatic and most expensive fix.

Spoke with the ZF service desk and they said- yes to check the battery, but being only a year old they had doubts. They indicated it is probably what it says it is and that is the solenoid and while there to replace all the solenoids as they can mechanically and electronically fail after many years.. Also indicted that replacing the bridge seal and the 4 small sleeve seals is practical to do on top of the unit. Said I would have other codes if other problems in the system.

But thanks for that and the battery suggestion is the second suggestion in that field.

Check this Tom. Might be the safest way to go. Or something similar. 291549648022 Ebay. I was thinking anout it or a verified rebuild with zf parts. Just for my piece of mind

Thanks. I had already looked around, but ZF was pretty firm in saying this is a solenoid issue and the kit along with the bridge seal ,the 4 tube seals and the sleeve seal should do the trick. They indicated that the only reason to replace it in total is that is if the TCM was out, but they said I would have many other codes and indicated that was very doubtful. Also said low fluid, but I have no leaks and even dirty fluid could cause the problem. Clearly new fluid is part of the whole deal.

Thanks Scott!

The shop verified through the electronics that the solenoid was not responding. I actually figure this since it just happened and no warning with any change in tranny performance. So I get, as ZF recommended as well as the shop, new solenoid kit for all, bridge seal, 4 tube seals and sleeve seal, plus fluid/filter and new bolts for the pan.
