I love the way the factory stereo looks, and sound is good for me also.
I hate that the car doesn't play MP3's.
Did the 07-08 s types stereo's play mp3's?
Is there any jag stereo that plays mp3's that can be switched out?

I don't want to hook up a ipod or anything like that, I have many cd's sent to me that I listen to that are in mp3 format I hate reburning them just to listen.

Can I switch out the factory cd changer with one that will play mp3's?

This would be awesome if possible!

Thanks

MP3s ewww. Can you re-rip them back to the CD format? I would guess no?
You can install the audio module and play them via a USB memory stick. Not inexpensive though.

I have been re-burning them back on cd but it's a pain, I have to burn 6 cd to get what I have on 1 mp3 cd.. I receive lectures once or twice a month in this format and listening to them in the car is best for me.

My old stereo spoiled me I guess.

Sorry, I really wasn't trying to lecture. I'm going through the whole MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC, WMA, WMA-pro, WMA-lossless etc. etc. thing right now.

What an ugly industry turf battle this is. The poor consumer ...

So as of this morning (but stay tuned) I've decided to rip the CDs to WAV and then i'm thinking of going with FLAC but that eliminates all the MS based players but not all of those support the Windows version WMA-lossless either! There there is the Apple backed formats and oh yah I got an entry level Ipad as a freebie so maybe I should be using that somehow too? A bit large for the car I think. A big theft risk too.

Now I hear that there are also issues with some players not sampling properly for FLAC as well?

Hay carumba!

I'd like to have a "MP3" (a misnomer) player so that I can see what's playing and utilize it's UI for operation and selection. The Jaguar's system will never do that. The Ipod,Iphone/Ipad interface is brain dead on this car. So is the USB.

Someone paged?

Yeah only way to keep the stock stereo and add MP3 playback (via usb stick or rudamentary ipod controls) is via the Jaguar ACM add on.

And if you want to keep the stock stereo don't worry about mp3 compression losses, things will sound fine. Bob is on his own theoretical debate about digital formats that's beyond the scope of playing music through the stock stereo.

And Bob, would you want to get rid of that ipad? I'm actually looking for one for a project. Let me know.

thanks for the replies I was hoping I could get a alpine cd changer with ai-net cable and just switch the changers out.....

I don't really like the whole Jaguar ACM idea, and after pricing it I def. don't like it.

I guess I'll keep the cd companies in business by continuing to burn multi cd's

George,

The Jag isn't the only place I'll be playing the music. I'd just like to pick a quality format "once" since all likely hood the CDs will physically disappear at some point. I did do a an A/B comparison of stuff on an Ipod vs an actual CD player plugged into the ACM module.

But if you're driving at speed with all that road noise I get your point.

However, sometimes the misses and I drive the STR up to lovers lane for a bit of Frank Sinatra and necking. So it's important to have the utmost sound quality in such situations. In between all the grunting and moaning that is ...

The Jaguar doesn't use Ai_Net. It uses a D2b fiber network, and all the connections between the cd changer amplifier are fiber and digital.

Oh and Bob you crack me up! Especially considering the chairman of the Board has been gone for so long that any recording of his is just an upsampled / oversampled analog recording to begin with!

Take care,

George

Lol I love how you spanned two different generations and genres of music as unacceptable!

I'm too old for Lady Gaga... But I had some Def Leppard Moments in my younger years!

Take care,

George

Looks like something Sadaam Husein would have used on the Kurds ...

I did watch a piece on the building of the Alpine demonstration vehicles for this years CES last night. Makes that orange thing look pretty tame.

Hey we'll get this guy an affordable stereo system yet!

I too miss this feature in my last car. But I bought a dock for my iPhone and just play music through an FM frequency. It's not ideal, but it's cheap and easy and works well enough for my commute.

Actually, I think Lady Gaga was the one universally denounced by all regardless of generation.

I'm still trying to figure out why we suck for mentioning her as being unsuitable?

I used to go into the Filmore East back in the late 1960s to hear Canned heat, John Mayall, Savoy Brown, Tens Years after and ... I heard the Who do their then new album Tommy in concert before it was out on vinyl. I saw a lot of bands back then. All completely sober too. Well, until I drank the wrong thing at a Grateful Dead concert one night.

But lady Gaga? Nah.
