str vs monstr z
while on my way home on the highway i saw a late 90's red z28 coming up behind me, so i figured it was time to play a little...i was already doing around 60-70mph...i heard him lay into his throttle and i immediately went to 5th and held it to the floor,, well this z28 flew around me and was able to get in front of me in my lane ,,, wtf!!the liscence plate read monstr z had some fat tires on it with duals underneath the car (next to differential)it had a roll bar in it and a big cowl induction hood.. now i am wondering how he was so easialy able to pass me? maybe he had 700 or more hp? and my question is 'what rpm does the str produce the most hp and torque'? cause i am thinking maybe i wasnt in the power band?? i have a low temp thermo, mafioso intake,k&n filter.new plugs and coils too. i guess my car isnt as fast as i thought it was
Keep in mind, although the STR is not slow, it is not fast either. In the racing world it'd be labled as quick in the best case. (I think Riski *RIP* touched 12.s?* <14.99 slow, <13.99 zippy, <12.99 quick, <11.99 fast, <10.99 wow. Please keep in mind that these are not writen in any rule book. Just something my friends and I go by for true street applications.
I had a 96 WS6 that ran low 11's with just a few bolt ons. That Z28 has just as good aftermarket for it. From what you discribed I don't question if it was in the 10s.
The point... Thier is always someting faster, but don't lose any sleep. The STR is VERY nice for what it is, and can handle it's own very well.

Yes, put it in manual mode as described above. 4th gear at 65-70 is only 3k-4k rpm, a really good gear to be in, pre-pounce. When ready to pounce, pop into 3rd and unleash the full fury of the beast. I've taken Mustangs, Camaros, M3s, non-Z06 Corvettes, and even a couple of Harleys doing that. And I am bone stock. However, if the other car is in their powerband, your results will vary.
I hate to be negative all the time, but in short, the STR doesn't wear it's hp/tq well...It's really heavy, our huge rotors add to ungodly about of unsprung weight, tranny isn't the geared for the best and I suspect we suffer a lot of drivetrain loss. For a comparision, a dodge neon SRT-4 has 250hp (which is often underated at 215hp or230hp) which has 37.5% less hp is pretty much dead on in the quarter mile assuming both drivers are "good"...An expert SRT-4 driver could beat an expert STR jag...So, my point is HP isn't everything, you might be surprised that the Z had way less than 700hp...
Pick your fights more wisely....a car that runs, I believe, at 10sec or faster on the track is required to have a roll bar. Sounds like this is the case for that camero.

Rosso Fiorano, RWD, Coupe, Formula 1/Capristo/Challenge, 3.6L V8, Stock# 63010. i work at my friends dealership and get to drive some pretty awesone cars like this one, we just sold a 2006 bently flying spur that was bad *** too.
i get to drive alot of cool cars that most people can only dream of, and i grew up with driving hot rods(1965 chevell malibu ss, dz 1969 camero,1970 roadrunner with a 440 six pack,1970 formula firebird 455 ,1987 mustang gt with paxton supercharger and a 250 dual stage nitrous kit, and way too many more.. so what im trying to say here is i love the str only wished it preformed a little better against the older muscle-
I think you guys just don't "get" this car. It was never meant to be a M5 killer at the time. It's a luxury car with a bit of sport handling (not all that much) and very good power. It's an 8 year old design now and when it came out it was already 3 years old. The handling, steering and transmission tuning could use a lot of improvement IMHO. But it's great as a piece of luxury entertainment.
A clean example is still a very big bang for the buck.
I take the view that futzing with it to try and catch up with all the other much faster iron out there is probably just going to end up in heartache. I know it can be made to go faster but if you really want to run with the biggest dogs out there then get a different car. Or get something purpose built for the track.

A factory stock late 90s Z28 was about as lame as lame can get. Obviously the one you ran into was not stock. Anybody with deep pockets can buy enough HP to go as fast as they want. Big Deal. Street racing is not cool under any circumstance. One member here was killed doing what you got involved in.
In summary:
+ Anybody with deep pockets can buy enough HP to go as fast as they want.
and
+ There is always something faster, but don't lose any sleep.
I know it has taken me a long time to accept this, but now that I have I find that my drives are much less stressful. The Z28 may be faster, but at the end of the day it is still only a Camaro (or Evo or STi or Neon or "one sausage, different lengths" BMW), while we have the great pleasure of driving a uniquely styled luxury sedan with a modicum of power and handling.

Dudes, I'm in the process of hopefully obtaining an ECU-dyno tune that'll benefit all. If you follow the mods on my 03 STR you're mood will definitely take an upswing. From a dead-stop I can take out many unsuspecting modern muscle. Believe it or not, the STR is blessed with high gearing and a dig-in suspension. These two variables will work in your favor when you up the boost, lean the fuel trim, and advance the timing. I foresee a 500+ hp STR in the very near future. This car can both beat and be beaten whilst in the lap of luxery. Having fun developing the STR is the name of the game.

As long as you're ready for the consequences and it doesn't get you down then by all means enjoy yourself. Having broken my race engine twice in the last 3 years as well as an unexplained sudden introduction to the guard rail I've had enough "fun". MY street cars don't get f****ed with.

That Z may have had huge HP, but don't dare ask it to turn or stop. I had muscle cars when I was younger, until I got a wake-up that they (muscle cars) aren't build to perform any trick other than going fast and straight.
10-4 on that. In addition to much superior braking and cornering, I bet your STR will outrun the Z-28 on the top-end any day of the week. As mentioned earlier, the STR has tall gearing, so you'll need the j-gate shifter to down-shift for the sweet spots.
Funny thread. No way will an str ever challenge fixed up American muscle in straight line speed(I mean the pony cars, y bodies and vipers). It's so easy to make big hp. I walked away from a Ferrari 355 from a 70 mph roll in the vette without even shifting out of overdrive. The str has great torque but so do the big cubic inch v8's. Btw, the Ferrari race was only at 585 rwhp...

An example of a very similar Jag motor making big hp: Avos's 600+ hp 4.0 XKR, primarily performed with a twin screw blower. As mentioned earlier, don't be surprised when you hear of a 500+ hp STR.
