Default Surging at 1500 RPM

Hopefully there might be some suggestions out there. I have an 03 STR with about 85K mi. Lately I've had a problem with the car kind of surging sputtering at around 1500 rpm while I'm driving down the road. It is definitely more noticible when it's unders slight load going up hill.

I had a mechanic friend of mine check to see if it was throwing any codes and it wasn't. However when this started the key fob codes went out which happened one other time when a worn out e-brake threw 30+ codes and killed the programming.

Anyway looking for the most likely source of the sputtering. Also of note there is no detectible change or other sound other than RPM variation when this occurs.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Sounds like misfires. Or an air leak, maybe PCV/EGR. But could be related to fuel pressure. Cheap item is fuel filter - when was it last changed?

Check air filter is not filthy and is properly seated, as that's even cheaper

Maybe torque converter trouble.

I'll try the fuel filter first as the air filter is new and see what happens. Interestingly in driving the car yesterday after about a 45 mile drive on the fwy the low rpm problem wasn't there or at least not noticeable if it was. As for the misfire wouldn't it likely fire a code?

You'll only get codes if a problem is so consistently bad as to flag them.
