Default Thinking about buying a S-type soon...

As the title says, what should I look out for when buying one?

I am looking at a 04-06 most likely with the 4.2L.

I am familiar with the S-type as my mom has a 2002 Ford Thunderbird (which is the same chassis and so on...).

Thanks

The 4.2 is great.

Think about the STR. Even better.

Yep, the newer the better in most cases. Most of the S-Type's major flaws were addressed by the last three or four model years. Just keep in mind that truly well-cared-for specimens are getting more and more difficult to find....

I drove a few before buying my 06 and it was the one with the most miles. Almost all had oil leaks to some extent and I felt some clunks shifting problems in 3 I drove.. One of the most amazing things about these is the ZF6hp26 transmission that I think is in 2004 and above and is one of the upgrades mentioned .. I'm fairly new to the forum and there are guys here that have forgotten more than I know but my suggestion is drive a few.. I also found a certified Jag Tech to go over the car with complete electronic and mech check. Bottom line I've had two Mercedes and one Beemer.. This is the best car I've ever had.

I think the (2002) Tbird used the 5R55N. The ZF 6HP26 is much better (and came with 2003-on S-Types in USA).

I also think the S-Type's suspension will be better - for a saloon (which my rather limited Tbird knowledge tells me a Tbird isn't!).

Go driving, you'll like 4.2 S-Types whether NA (300HP) or SC (400HP)

Default Under the unit

If possible, when going over any unit I would get the vehicle up on a lift so you can walk around with ease doing a good inspection. Take note the condition of the catalytic bits that are equal in color. Suspension bushings and such. I would even remove the belly pan for inspection. Go over the owners manual and check all switches and controls at engine operating temperature

I have a few of these boots split but they don't seem loose at all and nothing is rattling .. I planned to wait until I heard or felt one loose before replacing them. Is that a bad plan?

The risk you run with a cracked boot is that the joint it was protecting loses its lubricating grease over time, which then accelerates the deterioration of the metal-to-metal moving parts inside the joint. So even though you don't perceive any issues for awhile, that joint will eventually fail....
