wonderful. I thought I was going to have to remove the cats from the manifolds.

From start to finish removal time, how much time do you have in the job? i will be attempting this next weekend. Just trying to get an idea. Think It can be done in a few hours? I maybe lucky to have a helper.

There is one square rubber seal on the flywheel side and one small round rubber seal on the on the bell housing side. Remove the square rubber seal and you'll see the flywheel. You need to pry the flywheel around to each of the three bolts on the torque converter and remove through the hole where the square rubber seal was. Good luck!

Awesome Phil! Thank you for taking the time to post up pictures as well. Believe me I know what a pain it is when you want to get something done and "oh I better snap a shot or two". They will definitely help someone down the line!

No its taking me a few hours a day for the last two weeks to get to this point...Let's just say about 25 hrs so far...I'm in no rush but getting the tranny off those two rusted dowels took 3 of those 2 hour days!

Don't forget to tie up the torque converter so it doesn't fall out and spill a gallon of transmission fluid on your garage floor! I just straightened out a wire hanger and placed in opposite side of the transmission as you can see from the pics to hold it in place! In one of the pics, you can see the old corroded brown dowel of the left hand side by the flywheel...

I'm going to leave it alone for now...I believe in if it isn't broke...don't fix it...famous last words perhaps...

You might want to consider coating the locating dowels with anti-seize compound before you re-install the gearbox. The next guy (might be you) will thank you for it.

I usually spray some penetrating oil and let it set for a while. Then start drifting wedges into the seam to split the bellhousing from the engine block.

Work carefully and slowly so as NOT the break the housing. Usually a few wedges spread out are better than ONE BIG ONE!!!!!!!!!

good luck.

Thanks Bob! That did the trick...

Yes, I plan on brushing the rust off and putting a little lithium grease on it...thanks for the help Bob!

Some other random thoughts cpears...if the transmission has 80k miles on it... Go ahead and replace the auto transmission pan with the built-in filter and the transmission oil ... the shop manual says its a lifetime fill but that wasn't true for me...the procedure to refill is involved but can be done by following correct steps...I'm also flushing out the transmission cooler lines with Kooler Kleen Trans Flush followed by pressurized air and clean fluid because I had dirty transmission fluid and metal particles in the pan... Gotta get them out!

Default Yes I finished the job 3 days ago and it is running better than ever!

It went back together much faster than taking it apart. I made sure everything was torqued up to the correct specs and used lithium grease on the non- transmission driveline parts. If you can get one of the two lower bell housing bolts started, you can rotate the transmission into place to get the other lower bolt started. It helped to build a stack of boards to raise the transmission near the driveshaft end with a floor jack holding the front bell housing...
