Default Universal muffler?

Has anyone replaced their original mufflers with universal mufflers? What are your experiences? Is this recommended?

I am contemplating on doing this. The left muffler on my 03 S-Type, a car which is in otherwise good condition, needs to be replaced. A new muffler from Jag itself runs at about $500, plus about $100 in labour. I know a reliable mechanic that can replace both mufflers for $100 each (to keep them looking the same).

It will likely be a louder and will definitely have a different tone.

Geez...what next.....a coat hanger to hold the muffler up? You can buy these aftermarket for a lot less and they are OEM fit.

For $100 I'd do it, it might give a nicer sound.

I can only wish that I had a coat hanger when the muffler dropped and dragged off on the highway. The aluminum and steel contact point where the hanger meets the chassis rotted out.

Do you have a link for aftermarket S-Type mufflers? I can't seem to find one.

Cheers

I ordered X-Type aftermarkets. Stainless steel @ apprx $130 CDN each. They will be installed in a few days. I'll update once they're in.

They didn't fit. . . Now that I'm in a city again, I'm just going to go to a performance shop and get both mufflers priced out. It'll likely end up being the case that I might as well just get the OEM muffler.

It shouldn't be an issues. Do you know what style of muffler it is? Does it have baffling? Or sound chambers?

I ended up getting both mufflers replaced with stainless Magnaflows. They were 100 CDN each. Stainless tips were 34 each. The shop needed to custom fit some additional pipes to make it work. The Jag sounds great - a nice purr indeed. Is anyone interested in buying a passenger side OEM that is in perfect condition lol ???? (seriously)
