V8 S-Type Service
The April edition of Jaguar World Monthly has an article on servicing the 4.0/4.2 V8 S-Types. It seems fairly well done and had a couple of interesting pointers.
1. When removing the air cleaner, just undo the two outer clips and separate the upper and lower halves enough to slip in and out the air cleaner elements. They do not recommend completely separating the housing.
2. The pollen air filter should be changed only every other service, again due to the difficult repacement process.
3. Never mix the red Ford/Jaguar antifreeze with another type as it will really gum up the works.

Regarding mixing coolant types, I've had a gallon jug of red Texaco/Havoline coolant sitting on my garage shelf for several years. I use it to top off the red coolant in my wife's 2004 Lexus RX330 AWD as needed, maybe 3 or 4 ounces every summer. That vehicle just turned 88,000 miles this week and the cooling system has never given me any problems.
I assumed that I could also use this same coolant to top off our 2005 S-Type 3.0 when necessary. But your number 3 point above now has me wondering if I should do that. Does the article in the magazine go into any detail about any special formulation that the Ford/Jaguar coolant may require? I'd like to be able to use my existing jug of red coolant in our S-Type as well, but I think I'll hold off on that for further clarification....

Hi Jon,
The article didn't indicate what the special Ford/Jaguar antifreeze formula was, but did say mixing in a traditional antifreeze would cause a sludge to form and would cause overheating. I would get with your local Jaguar service department to find out what the exact antifreeze you need for your S-Type. I'm guessing that the 3.0 engines use the same type of antifreeze that the V8s use, but again, we would need to check with the service department.

Thanks Mike. I'll check on it. Just what I need - more stuff on my garage shelves. I already have three different weights of motor oil across two different brands, four different types of ATF, three different types of power steering fluid, two different types of brake fluid, two different types of fuel injector cleaner, two different types of coolant, probably a dozen oil filters, and I'm running out of room big-time....
On page 198, our 2005 S-Type owners manual says "use coolant to specification M97B44, ethylene glycol-based extended life coolant".
The label on the back of my jug of Texaco/Havoline red coolant says "meets or exceeds Ford M97B44D" among others. It is indeed ethylene glycol-based and guaranteed for 5 years/150,000 miles. It also lists a toll-free technical support number to call for additional information. I'll do that on Monday.
As of right now, I think this jug of coolant will do just fine as a top-up source for our S-Type. Perhaps that belief will change after I talk with tech support next week. If it does, I'll update this thread accordingly. I don't want to buy and stock yet another jug of hoity-toity overpriced coolant unless I absolutely have to....

Spoke with Chevron/Havoline tech support this morning. My jug of Havoline red coolant is indeed compatible with the factory fill of red coolant in my 2005 S-Type. As long as "M97B44" appears on the label and the coolant is red, not green, you're good to go and your car's coolant will not gel. If you add green coolant, however, then your car's coolant WILL gel. My jug of Havoline red coolant shows "M97B44D" on the back label. That last character "D" simply means that I have a newer formulation in my jug than when the 2005 S-Type owners manual was printed. The formulas are upward-compatible and my S-Type coolant is guaranteed not to gel by Chevron/Havoline if I top it off with this product.
I'm now convinced that I can go ahead and top off my S-Type's coolant as needed with no problems....

The JTIS CD says the red coolant is Organic Acid Technology (OAT), this is always that red/orange colour, five year lifespan. The blue stuff is only two years and you should not be using that in the S-type.
I've just done my pollen filter, and yeah, it's more of a job than it should be to replace a simple filter, mine was so filthy I can't believe it's ever been changed. You have to remove the wiper arms and scuttle first.
