Default Value of an S-type with a siezed engine?

Hi folks

I hope no one minds me posting here to ask this question...

I've been a very happy S-type owner for a few years now. Unfortunately the V6 in the old girl just siezed up in a grinding mess this week and the local dealership have said it's almost certainly a new engine job, double what the car is worth when fixed so not worth doing.

The Jag is 2003 with 90K on the clock and otherwise in good shape, I was wondering what the scrap/breaking/parts value of an S-type with a broken engine is? Also, is there any specialist Jag breakers around I should speak to?

I'm in Ipswich, Suffolk but I know a lot of specialist breakers will collect cars from some distance.

Thanks in advance for your help folks!

Ben

i have seen complete engines for around £400, i have bought a few parts from eurojag and found them very reasonable, might be worth a call

Man that's some bad luck!

Any idea what happened? We don't hear the V-6 engines do that at all. A few V-8's have done this. Especially the early 1999-2002 V-8's with tensioner problems.

Ben, a salveged 3.0 motor can be had at a reasonable price and a standard mechanic can pop it in for a reasonable price too.

Ben,

No problem posting a question like this here.

You'll get plenty of advice and a lot of interest from members thinking what they'd do faced with the same problem.

A call to JustJags in Walsall and Eurojag in Darlington to check for available engines has to be a good move.

Prices on non runners sold for parts are on the floor but a few hundred for another engine gets you back on the road.

A scrap yard/recycler will pick up your car whole and pay you about $50-$100 for it.

A private party interested in buying it as-is will probably offer $200-$800.

Replacement motor from a scrapped 3.0 s-type will probably run $400-$1000.

give this guy a ring he will have an engine for you 01621.744183 tell him were to go on his first price and he will bring it down. if you had a work shop/ garage/tools id come and help you fit it. wouldnt have thought a used engine would be that much £300-£450

Way to go "Fix it"! Due to the economy of a salvaged motor and install, I thought the OP should consider this option. I'm sure we're all elated that a person such as yourself offers to keep Ben's beautiful and no longer in production "S" have another lease on life. A good chap you are.

Thanks all for the thoughts and advice.

I will definitely have a look at a replacement engine... though I am afraid to admit I am not a mechanic by any stretch and would definitely not even consider (nor would I have the facilities/tools to) swap engines myself.

If I can get a 'pre-loved' engine for £500 - £600 is it likely I could find a garrage to do the work for similar money?

The dealership of course quoted about 3K in labour alone to swap the engine claiming it was two or three days work...

I think the car's worth about £3K (last time I checked) when it's working and about £500 max in it's current state.... so if I can get it fixed for les than £2K I guess it's worth it as it'll have a higher value for re-sale if nothing else?

Anyone know any good independent Jag garages near Suffolk/Norfolk that could do the engine transplant for sensible money?

Thanks again for all the advice!

Ben

PS: Someone asked what happened.... well, having checked the oil regularly before (and it always being fine), I seem to have left it about 6 months without checking this time, a few weeks back it started making a 'ticking noise' then the oil light flashed on, so I checked it, and it was pretty much dry, took nearly 2 litres to get it back to the right level... seems it was already too late though, tick got louder and louder and then on Wednesday it suddenly turned from a 'tick' to a screaming rending noise, then several loud smashes, the car began shaking violently and coasted to the side of the road with every light on the dash flashing red. That was the end of that.

A dealer will quote a big price. You want an indy (will be less than half dealer hourly rate and frankly probably better mechanics that's why they set up on their own). Try the UK forum...

Someone here may have a take on # hours to swap an engine.

This might sound a bit barmy, but it works for me although I have to do a French translation.
Download JTIS from here
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...archive-66031/
and print out the engine removal section for your car - or better load JTIS on a laptop so you can see the pictures.
Find a little independent garage with a good reputation and take the printout/laptop to them.
A lot of mechanics have Jaguar Fear but once they see step by step instructions they're fine and will be able to 'give you an idea' of the costs.
If you are going to do it start a new thread here to ask what people would fix while the engine's out.

Jaguar s type 3 l v6 engine from a 1999 runs well | eBay

If i was in your shoes i would buy that now at £200 providing it the right one. and its on your door step. I have a number for a guy down here (Im less than an hour from you) who can fit it and not charge the earth.

Cheers :-)

Mine is the 2.5/2.6L V6 version, not the 3L, and I'd ideally want something of a comparavble age to the car, ie: 2003 or more recent if I can.

Will make some enquiries next week though, see what's about.

Ben,
If it used 2 litres in 6 months you were due for a new engine anyway!

Hi, you must get the same engine, the heads have different sensors. So if your car is a 2003 you must get a late 2002-2006 engine not a 1999- 2002 one.
