I brought my 2001 S-Type to the Jag dealership, which is over 100 miles away, and they tell me I need a new throttle body, new ignition coils and new valve cover gaskets. Unfortunately they want $4,200 to repair and replace those items. The car takes a while to start and then idles and accelerates roughly. No problem finding new ignition coils and gaskets, but all I can find so far is used Throttle Bodies. If I'm going to be that far into the engine, I would like to put a new Throttle Body instead of a used one. I suspect the price the Dealership wants is largely caused by the new Throttle Body. So the question is:

Other than at the Dealership, where can one purchase a new Throttle body for a 2001 S-Type 4.0 litre?

 

My first thought is that they probably diagnosed it wrong so what's wrong with the car?

BTW, new won't be cheap and I don't see why not to buy used if you really want to change it.

 

First if you are going to own a Jaguar the only way to hold down the cost is to educate yourself about the car. Get the JTIS off EBay for $10 so you can research what your problems are.

Second I would change all the coils and plugs plus replace the valve cover gaskets and the spark plug well gaskets. After that see how the car runs. This can be done by any DIY shade tree mechanic BUT you will get a much better job if you are the one doing it.

Next if you really need a throttle body do some searches on this site. It's MUCH cheaper to send yours in to be rebuilt by an independent company than to deal with Jaguar.

You should take a close look at your vacuum lines at the same time, they are known to cause problems on the S Types

Have you cleaned your MAF sensor yet? Cheap and easy to do!

If you decide to go down the TB route, check ebay for remanufactured.

 

You don't need to buy a new TB!! You can rebuild your own with a lifetime warranty for a fraction of the cost. I had it done!

Thanks everyone. I appreciate all the information. I do have the JTIS and even got it to open and work... the first one I got I could never open it. I don't have any experience working on a Jaguar V-8, although my wife and I did a major overhaul on our 1966 E-Type although that was a little over 30 years ago. I was seriously impressed with Jaguar engines after having done that job! I don't think any other engine would have been running had it had half the problems the old Jag engine had!

Most of the time if you spend some time describing problems on here you can save a trip, let alone that far, to a dealer - and with what you did in the past almost anything will be DIY
