Default Right blower removal 94 XJ6 with airbag

Ok I'm probably missing the obvious somewhere and my search skills are failing me.

I need to remove the right/passenger blower fan. I have access to ProDemand but have lost confidence when step 1 states to remove the glovebox door.

As all of the 94 model year owners know. NO GLOVEBOX.

That being said. Does the airbag module have to come out for the fan to be removed it will the fan come out around it.

As far as the airbag goes the instructions say to just remove the facia board. is the the wood vent cover it does the wood panel on the dash just pop off?

If anyone has done this a quick point in the right direction would be great.

Thanks

Joe

Jeh, I just took the airbag and blower out of the Parts car - lemme tell you, it's deep down in there ..but it can be done. Shxtty job though, lots to remove.

First, the damn SRS panel ...couldn't figure out how to remove it at first BUT found out it hinges upwards - the thing is hinged at the top and there is a long metal "clip" of sorts at the bottom. You have to pry that bottom clip (it's more of a rail than a clip) down so the SRS panel can swing up.

I guess the idea is that when the bag goes off it forces that rail/clip down and the panel swings up out of the way and the bag comes out.

After you get the panel out of the way, you slack off the two pivot bolts either side of the bag and lift up the clips - that releases the bag and it theoretically swings downwards into the disarmed position. I say theoretically because my bag stuck about halfway down because some of the insulation behind the bag had gotten trapped in the arming mechanism.
I had to force it but I couldn't move it very easily so I ended up unbolting the whole thing and pulling it out. I put it behind the car and stood to one side while I removed the arming mechanism.

Anyway. even with it out there's still a lot of stuff in that area, The damn tray that holds the computer modules is a bit awkward but it just might be possible to get the blower out with it in place - remove the tubing to the blower and use a long extension/10mm socket to remove the 2 bolts holding it in.

The only good news is that on a 94 the driver's side is a walk in the park compared to the passenger side.

Good luck, once you get that SRS panel up, you'll be a lot further ahead!

The wood panel stays attached to the airbag door btw, it swings up with the wood still attached to it.

all the best

Larry

Thanks for the information Larry. I found a picture on eBay, someone is selling an airbag and that answers the word trim question.

It's just to hot to drive the car with only one blower working so I just starting tearing into to it last night. I'll bring home a few different tools tonight and take another stab at it. I figure once the bag is out of the way it should clear up a lot of space.

The left motor was a 10 min job. Even though it wa upside down.

Fwiw. The wooden cover comes off with 4 little 8mm bolts. I don't know if it makes it easier to remove the bag but in mind having this out of the way and not risking damage to the panel is worth the effort

btw, When it comes to the 94MY, the pdf is wrong about the driver's side airbag, says there's a torx head screw under the flap - instructions say unscrew it 12 turns to disarm the bag.

I tried every torx bit in my kit but couldn't get any to engage - reason? It isn't a torx, the screw head is unlike anything I had, looks like a special tool reqd maybe?

The steering wheel disarming screw on a 94

Sort of a 3/4 half-moon thingy,
managed to get it undone by slipping a 6mm socket over it and jamming a small flat screwdriver blade against the flats.

PIA though.

I took it all apart and have the blower out. I have a feeling I didn't get the bag to drop like it's supposed to. The 2 lower nuts were difficult to remove as j assume the bag is supposed to rotate down ??

Either way the bag and mount need to come out, the Ecu for the blend doors (?) another computer and mount as well and then you have a pile of wiring looking like a bars rats nest.

I'll post some pics for the next guys.

Our '93 has the same D-head fastener. What worked on ours was to grind down the outer diameter of an old small socket and create a flat inside with JB Weld epoxy. Not pretty, but it worked fine:

Joe - FWIW - I'm sure you've checked but if not .. might be worth seeing if you have 12v on the brown/blue tracer from the fusebox before tearing in again?

OK! - I just mentioned it because on my '94, the passenger side intermittent blower problem was due to a cracked solder joint in the fuse box ...and 94 fuse boxes DO have their issues

I have installed 'External' fuses to the blowers on the XJ40s. The 3 layer fusebox assy is not that reliable.

True enough I should check that. Ive had to fix a few things with the soldering iron, ands it probably easier than getting the fan out again.

I got it all back together and finally have so good air volume again. It was just worn brushes on the motor. While the Left fan has fewer parts to pull this wasn't a big deal as you dont have to be upsidedwn doing it.

When it happens again Ill need a new fan as there was nothing much left of the brushes or communtator. I took a few pictures and will post them as soon as I get a chance> Imgur is a little harder than the old photobucket but Ill make I get them this time

Joe - You don't need to use any picture service, i.e. imugr or photobucket or even flickr, just click the pic icon on the message toolbar and you can upload the pics directly to the forum without any "middleman"

Larry

p.s. glad to hear fair winds are blowin' down in NM again
