Default Passenger Mirror Dip Inoperative

2004 XJ8 Base Passenger side mirror dip when placed in reverse stopped operating few weeks ago. Noticed after fuel pump was replaced as last major work in which battery was disconnected. Is the mirror dip operation a program or memory fix. Is it a DIY easy fix ? Great feature - but not worth dealer fix. Thanks

Mine still dips, but it does not come all the way back up, when shifted out of reverse. Will eventually fix it myself, but at the moment i don't know how.

I never knew these mirrors were supposed to do that ! Don't know if mine does or not. What is the point of this "feature" ?

It is a 'configurable feature' in the DEALER OPTIONS section 'setup and configuration' of WDS/IDS.

You can look at the configuration to see if it is ENABLED or DISABLED.

It might have inadvertently been changed or the position sensors in the mirror have failed??

Thanks - can WDS/IDS be accessed via the nav. screen vehicle settings at some sub level somewhere? - I do not see any means of programing or enabling on own. Does it require mechanic /dealer enable ?

WDS/IDS/SDD are abbreviations for dealer-level diagnostic systems (see the link to a list of Jaguar acronyms & abbreviations in my signature line). There is no on-board means of reprogramming the mirrors, so you will have to visit a Jaguar dealer or an independent shop with the necessary system.

If I read that correctly then the driver's mirror can be configured to dip as well.

That would be very useful; I will try that any time I have to visit my Indy again.

When I worked at the dealer years ago I told the salesman on the showroom floor to have the customer come into the repair shop to setup all the features that they wanted.

I told them they get one shot at it around the PDI setup for no charge.

Any items that they wanted changed at a later date would be charged to the customer or sales dept.

I let the customer see the list and configure the features desired.

Hi rtcosic,

Just for the record, I have SDD so I've tried having both the driver- and passenger-side mirrors dip, and personally I prefer to have only the passenger side dip.

The dipping passenger mirror gives you a good view of curbs and such, which is very useful. But it's far less common to park with curbs on the driver side, so I've found that I prefer to retain the normal angle of view to help detect vehicles, pedestrians and other taller obstructions.

Cheers,

Don
