This is the front side of the damper. As my photo labelling skills are not as good as yours, I'll just describe it.
I put a chalk mark at the 12 o clock position on the rubber, just to highlight it's position. The inner portion that is natural steel bolts to the crank. The pulley that has 3 belts on it, will sit in this position. The 4 bolt holes that attach the pulley to the damper are clearly seen. The outer ring is painted black.
The next photo is the back (engine) side. Again, I put a white mark on the rubber at the 12 O clock position. The tapered cone with the keyway is what fits onto the nose of the crankshaft.
I think what you have marked as the inner piece is actually the shoulder portion of the outer ring.
The last photo is on my DS420 engine, but you'll get the idea. The V12 pulley is a 3 groove, instead of only a single. It will be the smaller diameter like the left most single pulley. Since that 3 groove pulley assembly bolts to the inner portion of the damper, you can mark the smaller diameter pulley and the outer portion of the damper where you indicated in your photo.

Reason: clarify terms
Thanks very much for that. Very helpful indeed!
So when I look underneath, I'll see Part 14 and Part 19 in the diagram assembled together as one pulley assembly, but Part 19, the triple-belt part, drives three accessories directly from the crankshaft, while the grooved/ridged one that drives (the alternator, right?) is the one that harmonically damped in the bad Jaguar engineering. But because Part 14[19!] is directly bolted to the inner ring of the damper, it won't move with respect to the inner ring and so any difference between its position and the damper's outer position will be the giveaway that something is rotten in the state of Denmark, so to speak.

Yes, based on some videos and photos I've been checking, that appears to be the case. It's not a sandwich (or a hamburger), but the rings of Saturn and Cassini's Division.
Thanks again! Very informative indeed!
PS: For labelling, I just use my image viewer. I use Faststone Image Viewer as my photo viewing program on my desktop, and it's got a very useful basic editing/labelling function as well so I don't have to break out the big Photoshop guns. It can't tilt shapes, unfortunately.

Reason: Screwed up part number; Jagboi put me right.

I think you mean 19, rather than 14. 19 rotates together with the inner portion of damper 14, attached together with bolts 20, 21.
But otherwise, yes, you have understood correctly.
I'll look into that program. I'm using Adobe's Lightroom as my primary photo editor.
Ah yes, 19. Got muddled. Thanks.
I use Lightroom for photo processing, of course, but for just doing quick labels and arrows and resizing and cropping, Faststone is much faster. I don't think Lightroom can even do arrows, come to think of it.
Well, this is interesting. I took a peek under the bonnet just now to confirm exactly where the harmonic damper is, and to see how the two parts and the belts all fitted in, and lo and behold, I found that someone had already done the white marking trick: Hmm. That's not right....
, as the markings still look pretty white, and they are the ones who diagnosed the slipping pulley in the first place. So that looks definitive.
The only remaining question is, why the huge discrepancy in part prices? From what XKs Unlimited says, "It is also available new as a rebuilt part (JA-EAC9693/RB) and as an aftermarket part (JA-EAC9693/X)." (And their prices are: new=$850, rebuilt=$380 (+$150 refundable core charge) and aftermarket=$254). Is there any real advantage to OEM rebuilt over aftermarket?
Pricing, no idea, and I would be careful with ElCheapo, for reasons you stated earlier.
I had mine relaminated 20 years ago, and cost me $250 Aus. The X300 3.2ltr cost $300 about 6 years ago, but he explained the X300 was simpler to do, dunno.
Mine were all V alternator drive.
Greg:
No, the earlier 5.3 has a V for alternator drive, and the Marelli is ribbed belt drive, BUT, if you want a ballsy alternator and a ribbed drive, use the Marelli damper on the Lucas car, and it all lines up.
XKs Unlimited's remanufactured one it is, I guess. Even if sending the old part to them is a hassle.
Although XKs Unlimited would be more reputable than some eBay guy even with a 99.3% positive reputation I guess even for aftermarket, I would hope. It's a bit more expensive than eBay, so hopefully not the bottom of the barrel.

Grant
So the crank dampers advertised have the ribbed belt drive pulley on them, then?

The late series III V12 saloons had the ribbed belt and a Bosch alternator. 115A I think.
The el cheapo one (not that one, this one) is apparently made by MTC, which on investigation appears to be distinctly dodgy. The one you posted is given as "Brand: Euromarque" which isn't a brand at all and so may well be MTC as well, and they also charge US$100 for shipping (USPS Priority Mail Express International, which is ridiculous).
I think I will make some enquiries at XKs. Jagbits also has a reman one, for rather more money ($596 including a $100 core charge). Does the 10% discount for forum members still apply I wonder--that would be a decent amount of savings.
All in all, it's surprisingly hard to track one of these down, and they are simply NLA new.
Thanks, OB. I can't find any prices on that site, though. How did you find out the price? $110 is suspiciously low....
Hi Someday
Dial in: Crankshaft Damper XJS on ebay.co.uk and it is about the 4th one down and listed as Jaguar Brand New Pulley C37892 from Austrailia £108.74 + £11.13 Postage
Don't know if that is the one that you are looking for but from the Pic it looks a lot like it
And the Company is called Jagdaim
I'd send you a link but the Puter keeps dropping it for some reason maybe it will be ok when it has woken up a little bit
Thanks, OB. Nice price, all right. Unfortunately, it's the wrong item.
They've got quite a nice range of different products on eBay, however. Prices seem good, too. Will definitely check them out more carefully for other things.

That's just the steel pulley, it bolts to the crankshaft damper, but isn't the damper.
Might be worth sending an inquiry to them, I've bought stuff from them before and they were good. Ditto Prestige Spares http://www.prestige-spares.com.au
