Hi I'm new to the forum and would appreciate some help.i purchased a 1991 xjr 4.0.always wanted one.i seem to have a problem that the car won't start unless i move the gearstick down between park and reverse.the lights on the indicator will light up p when I'm in r or d when I'm in n.the starter will engage and keep running when I'm moving the lever through the shifts.its like it's confused.i cleaned as many earths around the body that I could find.any help would be greatly appreciated.thanks.

It sounds like your shifter just need an adjustment. This would be done on the transmission end of the cable on this car. The switch is behind a tin cover on the left front corner of the trans. There is a write up on the procedure in the Haynes manual. I had thought it had been loaded into the stickies section but now I dont see it. Maybe someone can help Me out here.
