Where are you located mcleist? From what you describe, the problem sounds pretty severe. I won't speculate though. Hope you get another tech opinion soon.

I feel your pain Brother. I am having the same issue with my 97 XK8. In searching the forums I have seen everything from check the electrical fuses and connections to an A drum replacement within the transmission. One guy had luck with disconnecting the batt. Tried that one and the car drove great, I was very happy untill I placed the car in park. Light came on again. Im calling my mechanic next. If I find anything in my searching I will let you know. Please do the same. Cheers,

Got back from my Mechanic with a working car.... so far. My problem was apparently a low Batt . Im in Canada and its getting colder, this along with my short commute was not allowing the Batt to recharge properly. He reset the code and test drove it , turning it off and on a few times. It is now on a trickle charger and im hoping im o.k. Keep your fingers crossed !I hope yours ends well too.

Back in business ! Trickel charged for a few days , seemed o.k. Engine light was still on for a few more. Finally no engine light. Looks like Batt or Alternator. I still ordered the code reader just in case. Thx for the good wishes!
