Default 2000 XJR front end clunking

I have a 2000 XJR with 129k on it. I have a new engine (30K miles) so I don't really want to give it up yet, but I have a clunking coming in from the front end when I go over bumps. Suspension has been checked and it is OK. Vibration up the steering column though. Any suggesstions?

You might want to read up on the various front end noise threads in the X300 and X308 sections for the common causes.

Alternatively, if you are near Longview, book some quality time with member "Doug".

Common fault and I got tired of replacing the lower column assy. I thought they might all be replaced by now after all these years!!!!

Here is the fix you probably need.

@motorcarman,

How would the power steering return hose get into the picture?

And is there a characteristic distinguishing sound?

Another fairly common issue is the engine mounts, but if you're feeling vibes through the steering wheel, Bob's suggestion is more likely.

I don't know about the return line but I did replace the lower column to fix the slow speed 'clunking'.

A distinct sound/feel for the fault when you drive alot of XJ sedans all day.

Another thing might be the stabilizer bar bushes. Mine needed replacing when I bought the car from the original owner.

Well, after looking at JTIS, the shock is mounted slightly differently on a X308 than a XK.

But, 9/10 of the shock mount plate bolts and 3/4 of the mount plate bolts below them were only "firm" last night. Not falling off, and more than "snug", but definitely not as "tight" as you would expect a suspension bolt to be.

After tightening them, driving the car seems quieter today. The acid test of course is to go back to that one specific parking lot entrance and give it a go without creeping over the curb.
What do the front shock mount plates bolt into? Speed nuts, welded nuts? They definitely weren't all that tight.
