Default '04 X-type keys

We recently obtained two new keys that only need to be programed, along with new fobs. Is any of this possible to do at home?
Thanks.

Fobs yes, keys only if you have 2 original keys and the transponder chips in the new keys.

Other wise no chips keys no good, with chips dealer only.

just had a second key fob cut and programmed at Albany Jaguar in Albany, NY. Total $85 ($30 to cut and $55 to program). My used X-Type came only with one key fob, so like Mike just mentioned, I could not program it myself. I found the second one on E-Bay (brand new) for $79. Hope this helps.

I'll say. I had the Jeep dealer do a set for my Jeep 10 years ago and it was $90 way back then!

This is why I did not hesitate a second to go with the dealer. So, in summary, brand new uncut key fob(e-bay) $79 + cut(dealer) $30 + programming(dealer) $55 = $164 total.

I believe just the key fob is around $300, if you buy it from the dealership...

Let me get this right... as I only got one key with my 2004 x-type as well... Theres a chip in the key itself as well as the FOB needing to be programmed? If I get one from ebay so I'd like as much info as I can get so I can make sure it will work when taken to dealer/automotive locksmith to make a second key.

Can someone go through what exactly the key and fob have and do specifically in the programming and safeguarding theft?

Thanks,
Joe

They key blade part contains the immobilizer chip and if not programmed, your car won't start. The fob part controls the lock/unlock, trunk, etc. functions and can be programmed on your own in 30 seconds.

In order to program a new key fob immobilizer chip, you need to already have in your possession, at least two key fobs which are already programmed to the car, otherwise it won't work.

In your situation, you need to have the second key programmed by the dealership.

P.S. If you buy a second key fob on E-Bay, make sure that the key blade part contains the immobilizer chip and that the fob part contains a battery (it's kind of a pain to install). Mine came from "tranii" on E-Bay and the dealership cut and programmed it and it works perfectly. Hope this helps.

Well we went ahead and found a place that could program both keys and fobs. While it took two forevers, the CEL went off so all is well ( I hope ) .
