I have a 2002 x type 3.0 with 105,000 miles on it and I am in the US (California). When I turn the key all of the warning lights appear, the radio and windows work but there is no start up. There isn't a clicking noise, it sounds more like the hum of electricity. The battery tested full power at Napa. We even put a brand new battery to test just in case and still no luck. The car will start when jumped by another car, then start about 5 times after the jump but the problem will return again. The jaguar licensed mechanic advised it, most likely, was a connection issue between the ignition and starter. He had to admit he was stumped and said he never saw this issue before. Has anyone ever experienced this before? What was your solution?

 

It may be that your starter has a bad spot on the armature. If you look at the schematic below you will see that there are two windings in the solenoid. The pull in winding uses the armature of the starter for a ground which it loses when the plate connects the battery to the armature. Then the hold in winding keeps the starter engaged. The hold in winding doesn't have enough pull to to engage the starter.

I have seen it where the jump start seems to fix the problem which then returns.
