Welcome to the forum bal150,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help section to X-Type section for advice from members with the same model as you have.

JTIS (Jaguar technical Information System) gives first removing the A/C Compressor as part of the procedure! The guys here must have found a way round that.

I read and reread that thread (how to change the alternator from above without removing ac compressor) and nearly attempted the job but the bit about flexing the radiator fan housing just drained my already modest reservoir of courage so I coughed up 2.5hrs labour at the local mechanic to do the job and got the ac system recharged while I (they) were at it.
Of note, this my second replacement alternator. I,m fairly sure the first had a limited life because the cables were bad but were not replaced. Not sure but either way, they are a known weak link in the electrical system when they age so you may want to consider new ones. I replaced them myself this time and hopefully this alternator will. Last more than 2 years.
Good. Luck! Post how you go.

The shortcut method of removal from above is covered in post #5. For comparison and completeness, here's the JTIS procedure:

1. AC Compressor Removal & Refit:
JTIS - X TYPE AC Compressor.pdf

2. Alternator Removal & Refit:
JTIS - X TYPE Alternator.pdf

It sounds like they started with the alternator and built the car round it. What a pain to replace!

Default Follow up on the alternator r&r

I would first like to say thank you to everyone who responded to my distress call!!I had to remove the air box ,serp belt, compressor, then alternator, also replaced the cables, and the plastic thermostat pipe. it was very brittle.Iwas going to go the fan route but not much room to get it out didn't want to break anything.the whole job took me about three hours and I repair cars for a living, just never had to do one of these, thanks again guys!!

No worries Bal150,
I've found it's a huge strain on certain replacements and getting space you have to be a magician!
You did it though so well done to you! It's worth it when you get to the other side.
And I hope your baby is serving you well too!!
Regards, Stu

Good to hear you got the job done.

Thanks for posting the method you chose and the result.

I've added 'RESOLVED' to your thread title to help anyone searching for this information in future.

Thanks for the update. You have made me feel not so bad about chickening out of the "flex and jimmy the radiator fan housing out of the car" method!!
