Default Amber engine warning light.

On motorway today and suddenly felt a 'thump' followed by the engine power reducing and stuttering. Slowed right down and came off at the next exit. Switched the engine off and got the handbook out. States the waring light indicates an engine problem and has put the engine in 'limp home mode ! '. We decide that we would 'limp' home and drove slowly the remainder of the journey not going above 60mph. The car seems to be running as smoothly as it was before but the warning light is still on. Nothing obvious in the engine bay (oil etc) but i'm no mechanic. All the oil/coolant levels are fine. Any idea's anyone ?

ta in advance.

2002 2 ltr X type manual.

Is it the check engine light or the amber lozenge shaped light?

Hi iownme, thanks for replying.
Its the engine shaped amber warning light. It ran sweet as a nut after switching the ignition off for 5 minutes and re-starting. I would have put it down to a faulty dash warning light but for the 'thump' and loss of power when it happened.

Checked the car this morning with the engine cold, coolant a little low although no obvious leaks, topped it up. Engine oil fine, not discolored. Started first time and sounds smooth, revs smooth but warning light still on :-(

You can have the codes read @ most auto stores for free...that is the first step. We need to know what the fault codes are.
I suggest buying a code reader to keep in the car...u don't need an expensive one...spend around $30-$60. Its an important tool to own..even if u don't work on the car yourself.
Get the codes and post back with them

If you decide to buy one..ask for an OBD2 code reader

You don't need to multi-post.
