Default Auto to Manual transmission swap

Hi everyone,

My auto transmission shifts late and basically behaves bad, I want to replace it with a manual one instead of rebuilding, always had and loved manual cars.

Can you please provide me with the list of the parts that I need to get to make this conversion happen? ECU stays the same and just will need re-programming, right?

Thanks in advance!

Perform a search of this forum as this subject has been discussed before.

Given the amount of labour and parts needed to perform such a change, it may be more cost-effective to simply find another X-Type with a manual gearbox or locate a competent service shop able to repair your automatic gearbox.

What is the year, engine size and drive line type and number of kilometres on your vehicle?

Have seen the previous threads but none of them included the full parts lists, just someone who was planning to do it and made a pre-calculations with no exact details.

I really don't want to get into a romance with auto transmissions anymore and I defiently love manual shifting much more.

The labor is cheap (Armenia) here and the parts have funny prices on ebay so that doesn't play a role, I just need to know what to buy to get this thing going.

It's 2.5, 2003 Sport, driven 60000 miles.

Will be glad to be the first then but I need full parts list to make an order and proceed to the real work. Anyone expert in these cars who knows exactly what is needed component wise?

Well if you're going through with this you're going to need a:

Pedal Assembly (Good luck, either get lucky through ebay or a junk yard or)

Manual Transmission make sure it has the essentials like a Clutch cable!

Cross member to support the Tranny

New Driveshaft due to clearance issues

New Exhaust system to go around the new Tranny

Like everyone said it's not worth the headache and the cost. I'd be cheaper to go online and find a manual car then to do all what I listed

Hey Doc,

Thanks for dropping by and helping.

Does the used transmission I'm going to buy come with flywheel and clutch or they should be ordered separately?

2 driveshafts I guess, left and right?

I love this car, we travelled across countries and what not together. I got the time for it, since It's not a really daily driver so it can get worked on in the specialists shop while I'm minding my business and also it is dirt cheap, parts in total from ebay are about 500$, labor here in Armenia is laughable, compared to the States or Europe.

If I had to repair the Auto Trans it would cost me double, if not more, and one day it will again start to slip, bang and what not those 3rd grade transmissions do.

Is there anything else I should order or know to make less mistakes?

Thanks!

I might be wrong but a dude on here did this swap and had a ton of trouble. He ended up going with a mega squirt programmable ecu because he couldn't get his gages to work. You could try going with the ecu out of whatever car you get the mtx out of.

Otherwise I think everyone is right, it's going to be hard as hell and more then likely you're going to be fighting with the ecu. good luck buddy!

I searched and searched before I found a clean manual with a 3.0 for my turbo build.

Also, I hope you don't actually think there is a left a right driveshaft?

If you do, you're probably not capable of performing a swap of this magnitude. Unless I'm not reading between the lines enough here....

Edit: hahaha I guess you're probably talking about the front half shafts?!? Haha sorry

To get a manual one I will have to import again and its a mess.

I love my car, it has a story, so I prefer to make her happy and sportier

There is a Jag specialist with IDS / SDD, can he program the ECU to manual gear mode?

and I was talking about this stuff:

JAGUAR/DAIMLER X-TYPE 2.0 TURBO DIESEL CV JOINT DRIVESHAFT NEAR/SIDE (NEW) 03 08 | eBay

Should be changed?

I think it would be possible to reprogram the ECU for a manual swap.
Parts list from the top of my head:

Manual transmission
Clutch assembly with flywheel
Clutch pedal and brake pedal
Clutch master cylinder
Brake fluid reservoir
Piping from reservoir to master cylinder and from master to slave.
Gearbox mount
Shifter with cables
Half shafts

I would swap out that 2.5 for a 3.0. If you have everything then it should take around 3-4 days for the swap from auto to manual.

Thanks for the video and parts list!

What about various mounts and gaskets? How many and which would be needed?

Shouldn't need gaskets If you dont open up anything.

I'm picking up my part car in the next few week. And I'll use it to do this swap. Having a whole part car will help. I'll definitely document my work so if you dont do it in the next few weeks. I may be able to get you some good info

Terrific. It will take me time to get all the parts soon enough, so it will be fantastic for anyone to follow your journey. Good luck! Will wait for updates!
