Hiram, do you have an automatic tranny or a manual tranny. It will affect which set of fuses/relays we have to play with.

Hiram, first, check fuse F82 to make sure that it is good. Next, you will need to locate the backup switch (on the tranny). You will see 2 green/black wires going to the switch. Disconnect the plug from the switch. With the ignition key in the RUN position, install a jumper wire between the two pins on the car side of the plug. Do your back up lights turn on now? If yes, bad back up switch. If no, do you have 12 VDC on 1 of the green/black wires and not on the other? If yes, you have either bad bulbs or a wiring issue between the switch and the rear tail lights. If no, then you have a wiring problem between the switch and the fuse box.

I have an '03 5-speed and the backup lights do not come on unless the shift lever is in reverse and the lever is pushed and held all the way to the right side. If I let go of the shifter, the b/u lights go off.

Rab, that sounds like a bad switch. Replace the switch and call it good. I bet you will find that it will fix your issue.

Thanks, I have no idea how difficult it is to install a new switch, but will look into it if the b/u light stops working. Right now it is just a small inconvenience. It's almost like the switch needs a minor adjustment to make a better contact with whatever pushes it to make it work.

Rab, from what I can tell from the JTIS, it looks like the switch is built into the shift mechanism. It is located on the top center of the manual transmission. So, if you look near the back edge of the battery box, you should see where the shift cable comes in and will move a lever. There will be a plastic box pointing towards the engine that will have the reverse switch inside of it. Hopefully this helps you out.

Thanks Thermo! With the fuses, I have no idea which is the one you designated, is there a diagram available? Thanks for your help! Hiram

Hiram, look at the fuse box in the dash of the car. You will see that the fuse box has a bunch of big boxes (relays) and connectors on the top and 4 rows of fuses on the bottom. Go to the second row from the bottom of fuses. Count over 4 fuses from the left. That will be fuse F82. The fuse should say "10A" on the top.
