Brought X type back from the brink….need help with interior upholstery
Hello all ;
I am hoping to get some help with my interior….. the drivers seat leather is shot and I need the seat foam and heating element to properly restore it…. The seat heater is not working.…I have bought new leather for the seat bottom. Since the heater element is NLA , I don’t know if it can be repaired or if there is an aftermarket option. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Just a month ago my 95k mile X type looked like it had turned the point of no return…..Check engine light perpetually on, ABS light perpetually on, low fuel light perpetually on from a bad fuel pump and 3 coolant leaks in different places….plus a sunburned hood, roof, trunk and rear bumper. Seemed insurmountable , but a lot of parts later and a week at the body shop, the exterior is looking excellent and all the warning lights in the dash are off.
The only things I need are to repair the drivers seat and the steering wheel leather at this point…
Spike, I would say to talk with an upholstery shop. See what they say are your options. They may be ablet to get Jaguar seat skins through their contacts. They may also have a trick for the seat heaters. It is possible to fix the seat heaters, but that is normally only delaying the failure of a different point and taking out the seat there. An Upholstery shop will be able to put in new foam, get the leather, restore the heater, etc. now, do not be surprised when they throw a $500 bill your way. If you think you can skin a seat, then you can skin the seat heater (just a white cloth that goes between the foam and the leather), then you may be able to bring the shop the stripped down seat, have them refoam it, then you do the skin. But, this would most likely involve you having to find your own skin. I have a feeling that if you try this, the shop is going to tell you that you are on your own for the skin.

Thanks for your reply, yes I already purchased the
bottom leather at this point from eBay, the same seller you link to …..I got the top part from a used car and that is the entire top seat back, not just the skin……and it won’t match 100 percent but that’s fine.
So the foam and the heater are my predicament. As well as the steering wheel , which I would like restored
So I found a very reasonable upholsterer, who can do all I need for a reasonable cost. The problem remains the stupid seat warmer.
I wish I could find a generic once that I could splice in the connectors from the original piece into to the new, but the X type seat warmer has two cords coming out of it apparently. I can’t even find one from another Jaguar model that I could make work.
I am still trying to get my interior all put together. No luck with the seat warmer, and unfortunately the upholstery store/seller on eBay that advertises that they have the leather for the X type does not actually have the pattern….BUT, they are located here in Houston where I live, and coincidentally right behind my office, so they are willing to use the old seat cushion to pattern a new one for me. Problem is none of their available leathers match the SEL coded (barley) leather that I have….which is in itself confusing as “barley” in older Jaguars is a light brown but in the X type is cream..
I would honestly prefer to just find a decent drivers seat from a donor car in the same color and be done with it, but no drivers seat from a donor car is going to be in good shape, sadly.
so I guess I am looking for a seat warmer and some SEL BARLEY colored leather so they can make me a new seat
Thanks, this is the same company in Houston I just mention. I don’t know why they have it advertised this way. They don’t have any X type patterns. But the color is actually right on that photo , yes
Perhaps you should look in the RH drive markets (UK, Aus NZ etc), as their passenger seats are likely less worn than anything you might find in LHD markets.
Great....thanks Dell, missed that post while skimming through....that is Barley...same as mine.
I'm picking the only difference in using a passenger side cushion from a RHD car or complete lower pad with covering to replace a LHD drivers side could be that the passenger seat will have a pressure sensor embedded that the drivers seat pad would not.
There is a 2006 being dismantled in town currently that looks to be SEL. Have done an enquiry on condition of lower seat pad and leather to get some idea of price. Freight will be the b!tch though.

Thanks for your replies- as far as looking in other markets- I have already done it. As a matter of fact there is a seller on EBay UK selling a new original Jaguar, left leather seat cushion /squab cover in SEL….for under 100 dollars. Exactly what I need. ….seller will not ship to USA.
as far as looking for used in the UK, I am noticing that their passenger seats are as beat up as their drivers seats for the most part, and I think it’s probably because in Europe it’s not uncommon for an X type sized car to be a family car, so probably lots of usage.
Perhaps you might be able to arrange for one of the UK forum members to receive the parcel on your behalf and then forward it.
It will be double handling but the first local leg of freight might be relatively cost friendly.....international leg......throw the dice on that one!
Just a shame you don't have access to something like Ushop.
Our NZ Post set up three hubs, one in UK (Middlesex) and one in the US (Portland) and Japan (Tokyo), giving registered Ushop users an in-country address to receive parcels that are then bundled and forwarded to NZ.
That opens up those local markets and traders that would prefer not to ship internationally.
In the meantime I will see if I can find something suitable here and then run it past you.

at Amazon. Would likely require you to bypass the Jag switch and controller to feed 12V direct, then mount their switches somewhere.
Since I have family in Houston I have to ask, why not live without the seat heater? There can't be more than a few days in winter when it is below 50 degrees F there.
Last thought...If it is mainly you alone in the car can you steal the heater from the passenger seat to fix the driver seat?

it seems a putty to not repair things to work as intended- specially if the seat will be apart for refurbishing anyway-
Last night went ahead and bought some generic hi/lo pads. I am hoping to use them with the OEM wiring. I have the wiring diagrams and have done things like this in my XJS and my E……. I deliberately bought what look like smaller pads so that they hopefully work with the OEM wiring and switch
I drove mine to the grocery store several months ago and someone in an older Ford SUV pulled up next to me. When he opened the door I was shocked to see that he had the same seats as my X400! Then it dawned on me that Ford used parts from their parts bin. I know that the X400s were based on the Ford Mondeo. I bet if you need the seat heater you can get it from Ford.
Thanks for the responses. The leather part of the situation is solved.
I bought a full drivers seat back in almost new condition , in code IVORY -and ordered some SEL dye to get it to match my interior ✅
I bought a full drivers seat cushion in immaculate condition in the correct code SEL. ✅. ……Have not received it yet but pictures show it as perfect with the slightest amount of discoloration, on one panel ,which will be addressed with the dye mentioned above.
My seat heater situation, I am still working on.
The seat cushion I bought, which seems to be near perfect, comes with a heater. Hopefully, that seat heater is in a good a shape as the cushion is….
The seat back, however does not have a heater.
But the way I see it, it should not be that hard. The Jaguar OEM HI/ LO heat seater element has two wires going into it ….The generic HI/Lo heater I got has two wires going into it….. Should it just not be a matter or splicing the two wires that go into my OEM seat heater into the two wires that go into the generic heater?
