check engine light on and sputtering!?!
okay, so i fixed my hood and all, but now my check engine light is on and my car is sputtering while in idle or when i come to a stop, and sometimes when i speed back up from a turn, and it does have a hissing noise, like a vaccume hose is loose. I don't know how to check codes so help me out. i've tried searchin on this topic, but didn't find much. see if you can help. please![:@]

RE: check engine light on and sputtering!?!
oops! sorry...it's a 2003 X-type...with about 80,000 miles! I read somewhere, I forgot where, that every 30,000 miles I need to get a tune up, right? That kinda makes sense...since I've bought the car, I've put about 30,000 miles on it! Also, yesterday I went to Autozone and got the codes. I had 5...5 freaken error codes! The guy at Autozone said...all the codes were related to one another...that I just need to get a tune up.
Here's the codes they gave me:
P0171-Fuel Trim Bank One Condition
P0174-Fuel Trim Bank Two Condition
P0133-HO2S-11 Slow Response (Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1 Sensor 1)
P0153-HO2S-21 circuit condition (Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 2 Sensor 1)
P0455-EVAP Large Leak Detected
Okay, here's a little background on me! I know pretty much nothing about cars, I've always driven Japanese cars, which my husband took car of for me! My husband is a HONDA enthusiast! He's been swapping motors, tuning, wiring, and modifying Honda vechicles for about 10 years, BUT he will NOT touch my Jag! He just doesn't know much about Jags! I'm relying pretty much on Jag enthusiasts (this forum), such as you guys to help me possible give him ideas on whats going on with the car! The closest Jag Dealership is an hour from us!
So, do you guys agree with just getting the car tuned? What can he (the husband) possibly do to "solve" these errors? Thanks for the time and help, it's greatly appreciated!

RE: check engine light on and sputtering!?!
For the p0171 & p0174 you likely need imt seals, breather hose and booster hose. The p0456 is an evap leak that could be coming from anywhere. Need to smoke test it to find for sure. The 02 sensor codes are probably because you had vacuum leak for so long related to the p0171/74 codes that you need 02 sensors. The seals and hoses your husband can definitly do. This may correct the 02 sensor problem. It may not.

RE: check engine light on and sputtering!?!
thanks!
Okay...IMT seals, breather hose, booster hose...are these easily attainable at our local Autozone/Advance Auto Parts?
He said he's going to just put in a new O2 sensor. But he's at work right now, and wants me to go get the new O2 sensor. What is the difference in upstream and downstream sensor? And if he's just going to replace the O2 sensor, what/how many do I need to buy? I was on Advance Auto Parts website to get an estimate of prices...they run about 95 bux for the new sensors. How/where should we get a smoke test done to find the leak?
I've been reading up on O2 sensors at this website: http://www.autohausaz.com/jaguar-aut...n-sensors.html . They do a great job on descriptions of the "repair".
Again...thanks for the Help, I'm very greatful for the fast responses!!

moliz, when you are talking about O2 sensors and whether they are upstream or downstream, what they are refering to is the location of the sensor in relation to the catalytic converter (cat). The upstream sensor (also known as sensor 1) is between the engine and the cat. The downstream sensor (also known as sensor 2) is between the cat and the muffler. Both of these are important is the computer looks for a difference in O2 levels between the two sensors to ensure proper operation of the cat.
As a general rule, the downstream sensors don't fail as the conditions in which they operate are not that bad. The upstream sensors tend to fail if you are going to have an O2 sensor fail as they have to deal with the extreme temp of the exhaust and harse gases coming out of the engine. Replacing the upstream sensors now may not be a bad idea, but is not required. But, like some of the members say, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
If you need more info on this, just hollar.

Hi - I'm having the same codes (P0171, P0174, P0133) from my 2002 X-Type, and the code reader includes the following measurements:
STFT Bank 1: 5.4%
LTFT Bank 1: 19.5%
STFT Bank 2: 3.9%
LTFT Bank 2: 19.5%
Fuel pressure: 5.4 Psig
Intake Man Press: 9.4 inHg
Mass Flow Sensor: .45 lb/min
Throttle Position: 3.1%
Do these help me in any way to define just where the vacuum leak might be? And do you know what STFT and LTFT are?
Thanks!
Jason
