Default Doesn't move.

Just wondering if anyone has heard of this problem.
Was talking to a guy, about his 2002 x-type 2.5 with a 5 speed manual.
It was running fine. Now it won't move. Motor still idles, just no movement.
He was told that it is because of the drive belt being broken, which he says it is.
I have not seen the car, it's 4 hours away, but I have never heard of such a thing.
I told him maybe the clutch is gone or the Transfer case?
Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts or ideas.
Thanks.

Drive belt causing the car not to move? Sorry, the drive belt will only cause your accessories not to get any power which can lead to a battery that will die in the near future as you are running off of only the battery.

As for why the car is not moving, the most likely thing is the transfer case failing. After that, the next most likely thing is the transmission failed internally. Much beyond that, not sure what it could be unless he is suffering from multiple problems that all occurred at the same time.

Sounds like clutch to me. Thermo, even if the tc failed wouldn't the vehicle still move as it's primarily rwd?

chknhwk, depends on how the transfer case breaks. If the input shaft goes, then you are dead all the way around. But, you are right in that it could be the clutch too.

Yeah, I didn't think about the input shaft, good call. Is that a common failure?

Default no movement

That's kinda what I thought, maybe the clutch. Supposed to get more info, hopefully actually see the car. Another friend was driving his x-type (auto) on the highway and lost his transfer case. It just lost movement, after he pulled over.
Just a thought... is it possible to diengage the transfer case, like a Saturn VUE my other friends friend had, and make it just front wheel drive?
