but you also need the brackets for the screws that hold the cover on...these are not like the snap on/snap off covers on newer Jags. But in terms of appearance the cover does make a significant improvement.
If the cover is anything like the one on my diesel the amount of sound deadening is amazing.
Perhaps the petrol ones are not padded.
No, the petrol covers are not padded, but there is probably a cewrtainamount of sound suppresion anyway. I have transferred these coversfrom one car to another- no propblem at all but the brackets also have to be transferred.

That's why the link that Dell provided is so helpful.
A couple of local (not pick-your part) auto-dismantlers have the engine and hopefully one of them will have the cover intact with all the needed bits to install on mine.
I once bought a engine cover for one of my XJS'.. The hard part was rounding up the bits to install it. Though I ended up not using it, I did keep the extremely-rare/hens teeth spring loaded fasteners that attaches it to the fuel rail
So my 02 had the cover but my 06 does not. Can the cover with appropriate brackets be retro-fitted to my 06?
I had a chance to test fit the engine cover to my '07 last weekend.
The only thing that I noticed is that it slightly contacts the lines from the ABS pump, enough that I'll have to use a a heat gun to clearance the cover a bit. It will not be noticeable.
Pretty much on the same topic; I ordered 2 sets of these "Chrome Engine Bay Lettering" a couple of weeks ago from a chap in the UK.
From the ad "Ideal for adding a touch of class to your X-Type engine bay. The 2D lettering is easy to apply supplied as individual letters to place over the existing raised plastic lettering on the engine cover. The letters are a fantastic fit after hours of development and testing (On my own X-type!)".
I thought they looked pretty spiffy
