Question First Jag! wont go in gear

Just got my first jag, 03 type 2.5. Really awesome condition. I got it for a really good deal, knowing the transmission may need replacement. After poking around on the forum, seems to be a small possibility that its something else.

The car wont go in gear, if you go from park to reverse you can feel it going into reverse. You goto neutral you can feel the car relax, you put it in drive or 4 3 2 it feels the same as neutral. All you get is about 50-100 rpm drop from neutral to drive.

When I got the car the battery was dead. I jumped ran for a lil bit then showed gear fault and would stall the car. Bought a new battery and it runs for a while. pulled the codes and got 1603, 1601 and 1000. Cleared them and I just get the p1000.

Also when you move the j shifter all the gears light up properly. And it rolls freely in neutral. What should I do first?

check the fluid levels 1st also you need to access the gearbox codes if you have your own code reader they don't always show up unless you have a top range reader. what do you mean by stall do you lose all drive this would point to low fluid also if it drives for a while then loses drive then could be blocked filter like mine as i have just took my box out and replaced all clutch plates and o-rings and new reverse piston

By stall i mean shut down. Before I changed the battery, After a jump it would idle for about 5-9 minutes then just shut off and say transmission fault. I haven't gotten to drive it forward yet. Only reverse.

sounds like TCM is throwing lots of faults and the ECM is shutting the engine down it will do that if there are too many speed differences with the sensors in the gear box you can ceck the sensors and solenoids from the 2 plugs on the side of the gearbox the workshop manual tells you how to do it and what readings you should get

Just drained the fluid little over 3 qt's came out, i put 3.5 back in. Still no change. Also after the new battery I don't get any gearbox faults. I just have a cheap obd2 reader. Do i need to buy a better one to see what the transmission is doing?

djbess, when you changed out the fluid, did you just put in just over what you pulled out, or did you fill it to the recommended amount (ie, just coming out of the fill hole)? If you only put in slightly more than came out, try following the procedure on filling the tranny. What you are describing sounds like either low fluid or the tranny fluid pump went.

When I get home I will crack open the fill level bolt and see if anything comes out. If it is the low pressure pump can that be changed while it's on the car?

djbess, trannies are my one weakness when it comes to cars. I know enough to get by. I need to get my hands on a few trannies, tear them down and rebuild them to get more comfortable with them. I am not sure with this vehicle. This is one of those things that I would have to trust what a shop tells you.

hi djbess having just stripped and rebuilt my gear box the oil pump is in the drive side and will have to come out to be checked as with the filter the trannies are the same for 2.5 and 3.0 they are not to scary i did all the clutch plates o rings and new reverse piston and filter i think you should get someone who can read the gearbox codes. you can remove the valve pack and get that tested on it's own and you can get to the reverse piston and some of the clutches from the left wheel arch but there is very little room to move. i found it easier to drop the box out. Itmax did it not so long ago and posted some pics on how he did it
