Default Front Right CV Axle

Is it possible to seperate the CV Axle from the intermediate shaft going into the Transfer Case? Or is this a solid piece?

They do come apart but why would you want to split it. If the joint has worn you will not be able to replace just the joint.

DO NOT PULL THE AXLE COMPLETE WITH LINK SHAFT THROUGH THE TRANSFER CASE!!!

The retaining clip on the end of the link shaft will tear the seal in the transfer case.

There is a special tool to ensure that the shaft does not come out all the way when working on the drive axle or transfer case. TOOL #307-446

Warning from workshop literature.
CAUTION: THE TRANSFER CASE LINK SHAFT SHOULD ONLY BE EXTRACTED BY A MAXIMUM OF 200 MILLIMETER OR DAMAGE WILL OCCUR TO THE INTERNAL SEAL.

Just leave the link shaft in the transfer case and remove the axle from the link shaft.

I have a decent size leak between my Transmission and Transfer Case. I didn't really want to cut the clamp on the CV axle to separate it in the plunge joint. I haven't moved it beyond its limitation as I read a few other threads on transfer cases and their internal seals.

I do see it moving back and forth maybe a mm. The issue is when I tap it with my sledge it loosens the whole axle so I have to put it back and try again. Does this special Jaguar tool (307-446) only hold it after it has been removed? Should I use a fork to separate them?

I might start a thread on questions transfer case as I don't want to mislead readers in this thread as it pertains to the CV axle alone.

*** I read the link and it shows a special tool *** Going to the tool store now.

You are going to have use a wedge between the link shaft and axle shaft to separate the two. There is a thin rubber ring to seal the joint that will likely be destroyed in the process.

TSB XT307-S941 JATCO JF506E Transmission Replacement has a subsection on removing the various components related to gearbox removal and installation.

Read through some of it for guidance.

Thanks for all the help guys. Everything worked out fine. The CV Axle split from the intermediate shaft with the bearing separator. Now I can continue the adventure.

I finally got down to removing the Transfer Case and the shaft has no retaining clip at all. Maybe I could have pulled it out with the splitting of the CV axle. Is it possible that the dealer left the clip off? The dealer changed this engine last year.

Someone might have left the retaining clip off?? You might want to install one but then again, if there is NOT a clip there, you can carefully pull the link shaft out in the future??

No guarantee that the link shaft will stay in place without the clip.

When these cars were new, we had an X-Type with a leak between the gearbox and transfer case like you are describing. The 'O'ring seal was damaged from the factory and we had to install a new one.

I had to order the o-ring you spoke of "C2S5132", the dealer calls it a "Input Shaft Case Seal". I am going to make a new thread about the transfer case soon. Still waiting for the ordered seals to arrive. Thanks for the help, definitely appreciated.
