Question Fuel Advice on X-Type (2002) Sedan

Hi all!!
I pick up my X-type finally tomorrow.
It is a 2002 sedan.

Do you all feel that using High test fuel is the only way to go with these?

Or do you use Mid grade?

Thank you in advance for your input.

I typically use Premium but have switched to mid-grade when prices for the good stuff have gone over $4/US-gallon (eat your hearts out you over-taxed British... ;-)

The ECU will adjust for lower octane and control any pre-ignition, you just may loose a little performance and gas mileage.

lamoura, using a lower than premium fuel has had mixed results here. Some people have had no issues and claim they get the same mileage. Others say the car runs the same, but they see a slight drop in mileage, then others have had serious issues. So, what is your car going to do? I have not found a commonality between the grade of gas and anything else with the car. You can try, but be ready to buy about 4 bottles of "108 octane" fuel additive to get the octane up a little bit or drive the car till the gas gauge is on E, fill up only to half a tank (about 7 gallons) and then see how the car performs. Then, if you start having issues, you can fill up with premium and hopefully that will get you to a high enough octane that the car will be somewhat happy.

On a side note, I run premium all the time. I guess I have no problem with paying the extra $4 a tank full to ensure my car runs right every time.

Unless you believe that you are smarter than the engineers that designed these engine then I recommend using the fuel they list for them.

ha ha....no...BobN, I'm sure I'm not "smarter".

Just wanted to know opinions that would probably be smarter about this car than I.

So premium it is. This will be my only car, and I dont want to take any chances with it.

it is such a reasonable price that I'm sure I can pay the extra.

Besides, God blesses me every single day. He'll get me where I'm going

Thank you ALL for all the help and knowledge on this car.

Gin
