I was thinking a pulley myself. If it was the power steering pump, when you were moving the steering wheel, it would have changed. Granted, I would tell you to see if the noise changes when you turn on the A/C. If it does, you may have a bearing in the A/C compressor that is going out on you.
I think the next check you need to do is to open the hood and see if you can narrow down where the noise is coming from. You may want to even try removing the tire on the side that the noise seems to be coming from so you can stick your head inside the wheel well and see if you can narrow down the source of the noise.

I've had that noise in my 03 X for 100,000 miles but NEVER that loud or sitting still or in reverse, just around 20-30 mph, reminds me of two ton truck gear box noise.I have never investigated it because it always the same, not got worse or better.Yours sounds so much louder and in reverse too almost sounds like a power steering pump that has got air in it or foaming because it's low on fluid. I would some how check the trany level, run it in different (3rd) gear to see if the pitch changes I'm going just on the recorded sound also not hands on.

My Mechanic had a listen to both of the clips i.e. shula's and mine and says we have two different sounds. When I listen again, I think he's right. He says, like Thermo & Dr. DOme, that his is probably a pulley.
We, originally, thought mine was also a pulley...so we replaced them and the belt...to no avail.
Hearing this sound clip:
He thinks it might be a catalytic converter...maybe. But it only makes the noise from cold, under load i.e. moving. It goes away quickly especially now as I've learned that if I very easily give it gas and let it change gears on it's own i.e. not mash the pedal down, it goes away in a couple of blocks.
I'm going to leave it with him over night on Monday so he can hear it Tuesday morning.
In the meantime....anyone care to venture a guess?
