i need help to identify what this is so i can get a replacement part
the oil is leaking out of the rear drive shaft right where it hooks into the splitter box by the transmission.
the seal looks kind of like a half shaft boot and it is leaking out of there and spraying oil all of the under side of the car, i am not even sure where the oil is coming from? the torque splitter? the transaxle?

 

its leaking from the transfere case and making the grease i n the old style cv joint for the driveshaft sling out the grease. even though it may look like you lost alot of lube from the T case you didnt. Ive checked many after fixing the leak and found them still at the correct level. You need take off the drive shaft( front) then the output nut offthe flange for the T case. clean real well with brake clean and apply sealant liberally to the base of the ut ans reinstall. Then regrease the end of the drive shaft with cv joint grease and youre done.

 

How do you check the level? I thought this was impossible.

 

Jack up the left of the car 2' on jack stands and remove the fill plug, fill till it drains out, or should drip out or be right at the threads

 

what part goes up 2 feet? the outermost part of the body?
or do you mean 2 feet under the hanging wheel? do both front and rear have to go up equally?

 

the left side of the car equally front and rear, measure at the pinch mold

 

if i find the torque splitter to be low on oil what type of oil goes into it?
there was a ton of oil in the drive shaft when i just took it apart
looked red almost like regular ol tranny fluid?

 

gageman, the transfer case is filled with full synthetic 75W-140 gear lube. The bottle I get says it is for SUVs and light trucks, but it is the right stuff. I buy Mobil 1 stuff.

 

What is the torque spec for that large nut that holds the coupler to the transfer case? (The 'output nut' referred to above.)
